Chapter 6 - The Scorched Earth Policy

With Marcus and Evelyn locked behind bars awaiting trial, my legal team launched an all-out civil and financial assault against the Vance corporate empire.
Under Victoria Sterling’s brilliant guidance, we filed a massive civil forfeiture and damages lawsuit under the state’s Victim Recovery Act.
Every asset Marcus owned—his multi-million-dollar estate, his offshore luxury cars, his stock holdings, his private jet shares, and his corporate accounts—was frozen by court order and systematically liquidated to satisfy civil judgments and fund Hope’s future care.
Furthermore, forensic auditors working alongside Detective Frank Carter uncovered a massive web of corporate fraud within the Vance Logistics Group.
Marcus had not operated alone. Three senior board members and two corporate accountants had actively helped him cover up his multi-million-dollar embezzlements, turning a blind eye to his sudden erratic behavior in exchange for fraudulent stock options.
Within two months, federal indictments were handed down.
The Securities and Exchange Commission seized control of the firm, stock prices collapsed by eighty percent overnight, and the Vance name—once spoken with reverence in corporate boardrooms across the nation—became synonymous with crime, cruelty, and ruin.
One afternoon, while sitting in Victoria’s sunlit office reviewing asset division documents, Clara walked in holding a newspaper.
She set it on the desk in front of me.
The headline read: "RICHARD VANCE RESIGNS IN DISGRACE AMID FEDERAL EMBEZZLEMENT INVESTIGATION; VANCE LOGISTICS FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY."
I looked at the photograph of the once-mighty corporate tycoon slipping out the back door of his Manhattan headquarters, his head bowed, surrounded by federal agents.
“They tried to buy your silence, Elena,” Clara said softly, sitting beside me. “And now they don't even have enough money left to pay their own legal defense teams.”
“They built their house on lies, Clara,” I said, looking out the window at the city skyline. “When you take away the money, there’s nothing left to hold the walls up.”
At that moment, my phone chimed with a video call notification.
I tapped the screen.
It was my pediatric care team at home. The screen showed three-month-old Hope lying on her play mat, giggling happily as she kicked her small legs, holding onto a wooden rattle. She was healthy, thriving, gaining weight rapidly, and surrounded by love.
My eyes filled with tears of pure joy.

The Vances had tried to take everything from me—my dignity, my health, my freedom, and my child. But sitting in that chair, watching my daughter’s bright, beautiful smile, I knew that Marcus had failed completely.
He had locked me in a cage, but I had come out stronger, freer, and more powerful than he could ever dream of being.
