CHAPTER 3 – The Counterclaim

The next morning, Daniel made his first mistake.

He filed a temporary custody petition.

Not because he had a strong case.

Because he thought she was still the version of Emily who hesitated.

By 10:00 AM, Emily had already met her lawyer.

By 10:37 AM, the video file was being reviewed.

By 11:15 AM, Daniel Hart’s world started to fracture.

Because what he had forgotten—

what arrogant men always forgot—

was that cameras don’t interpret.

They record.

And this one had recorded everything.

Not just the nursery.

But the hallway conversation.

Patricia’s voice:

“She’s emotional. She won’t fight this.”

Melanie’s silence.

Daniel’s approval.

And worst of all, his sentence again:

“She’ll adjust.”

Emily sat in the legal office while the screen played.

Her lawyer didn’t speak until it ended.

Then he asked one question:

“Do you want custody, or do you want control?”

Emily thought about Lily sleeping in a borrowed apartment.

About the torn letters on the wall.

About another child placed in her daughter’s place like furniture.

Then she answered:

“I want truth. The rest will follow.”

By afternoon, Daniel’s attorney called again.

This time faster.

Less polite.

“There’s no need to escalate this,” he said. “Mr. Hart is willing to offer financial compensation and shared custody arrangements if you stop circulating private recordings.”

Emily tilted her head.

“Shared custody?”

“Yes.”

She almost laughed.

“Tell him,” she said slowly, “he didn’t share anything when it mattered most.”

Click.

That night, Daniel came to Claire’s apartment.

He didn’t knock politely.

He knocked like a man still believing ownership applied to people.

Emily opened the door just enough to see him.

He looked tired.

Not guilty.

Not broken.

Annoyed that consequences had taken time out of his schedule.

“This is ridiculous,” he said immediately. “You’re escalating something that doesn’t need to exist.”

Emily stayed silent.

Behind her, Lily slept.

Daniel softened his voice.

“Just come home. We can fix this.”

She studied him for a long moment.

Then said:

“You didn’t even notice she was gone from her own room.”

His jaw tightened.

“That’s not what happened.”

“It is exactly what happened.”

A pause.

Then his voice sharpened.

“You’re being influenced.”

That one almost hurt.

Almost.

Emily nodded slowly.

“You’re right,” she said.

His expression eased slightly.

“I’m glad you’re being reasonable—”

“I’m being influenced by the footage,” she continued. “And the law. And the fact that my daughter’s name was taken off a wall while your mistress moved in.”

Silence.

Cold now.

Sharp.

“You’re going to ruin this family,” he said.

Emily stepped closer to the doorframe.

May you like

“No,” she replied. “You did that when you decided I was replaceable.”

And she closed the door.
