Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

Three weeks later, a torrential summer rain poured down over the town of Fairview, drumming a steady, rhythmic pattern against the glass of my mother's living room windows.

Inside, the house was warm and cozy. A small fire crackled in the newly restored brick fireplace, casting a warm orange glow across the room. My mother was sitting on the sofa, comfortably knitting a soft wool blanket, while I sat at the desk nearby, reviewing the final legal briefs for the upcoming preliminary hearing.

Suddenly, the front doorbell chimed.

I frowned slightly, glancing at the clock on the wall. It was nearly seven o'clock in the evening, and we weren't expecting any callers.

I stood up, walking to the front hallway, and checked the security camera monitor installed beside the door. Standing on the porch, drenched in rain and shivering beneath a thin coat, was a young woman holding a wet leather folder.

I unlocked the heavy deadbolt and opened the door, holding the screen door slightly ajar.

"Can I help you?" I asked cautiously.

The young woman looked up, her face pale, her eyes wide with anxiety. She looked no older than twenty-five, wearing a simple office suit that was soaked through from the rain.

"Are you... are you Elena Vance?" she asked, her voice trembling.

"I am. Who are you?"

"My name is Sarah... Sarah Jenkins," she stammered, clutching the leather folder tightly against her chest. "I... I was Chloe’s personal assistant at her interior design firm until two weeks ago, before the company was shut down by the state investigators."

I eased the screen door open slightly further, observing her closely. "What do you want, Sarah?"

"I... I have something you need to see," Sarah whispered, glancing nervously over her shoulder toward the dark street. "When the police raided Chloe’s office, they seized her primary computer servers. But they missed something. Chloe had a private encrypted hard drive hidden inside her personal wall safe—a hard drive she told me to destroy three days after her arrest."

My eyes narrowed sharply. "And you didn't destroy it?"

"I couldn't," Sarah tears welling up in her eyes. "I worked for Chloe for two years, Ms. Vance. I saw how she treated people. I saw how she talked about your mother. She forced me to falsify invoices, to hide cash transactions... I was terrified she would frame me if I went to the police. But when I heard she was trying to get a plea deal, I knew I had to bring this to you."

I opened the door wide. "Come inside out of the rain."

Sarah stepped into the foyer, shivering as she wiped her feet on the mat. I brought her a dry towel and a warm cup of tea, leading her into my private study away from the living room so as not to disturb my mother.

Sarah sat nervously on the leather chair, placing the wet folder and a small, metallic flash drive onto the desk.

"What's on this drive, Sarah?" I asked, setting my laptop in front of her.

"Video files," Sarah said, her voice dropping to an anxious whisper. "Chloe installed hidden security cameras throughout your mother's house six months ago. She said it was to 'monitor' your mother's movements, but she actually used the footage to study your mother's habits—to learn when she was most tired, when her memory was foggiest, so she could force her to sign financial documents."

A cold, familiar fury flared inside my chest.

I plugged the flash drive into my computer, entering the decryption key that Sarah provided from her folder. A directory opened on the screen, revealing dozens of timestamped video files spanning the last six months.

I selected a file dated three months prior, clicking play.

The crisp high-definition video showed my mother's bedroom. Chloe stood over my mother, who was sitting trapped in her armchair, weeping quietly. Chloe held a thick stack of papers in one hand and a glass of water in the other, her face twisted in a cold, demonic sneer.

"Sign the authorization form, Evelyn," Chloe’s sharp voice echoed clearly through my laptop speakers. "If you don't sign it right now, I'm throwing your heart medication down the sink, and Julian won't be back until Sunday. Do you want to suffer through the weekend without your pills?"

"Please... Chloe..." my mother's weak voice whimpered from the screen. "That's my pension fund... Elena told me never to touch that..."

"Elena doesn't care about you!" Chloe snapped, grabbing my mother's chin roughly and forcing her head back. "Elena left you here to rot! We are the ones who control your life now! Sign it!"

I closed my laptop screen with a sharp slam, my knuckles white as I gripped the edge of the desk.

My breathing was slow, deliberate, and icy.

Sarah shrank back in her chair, terrified by the sheer intensity of the rage radiating from me. "Ms. Vance... I'm so sorry... I should have come forward sooner..."

I took a long, deep breath, forcing my composure back into place. I looked at the young woman, my tone softening slightly.

"You came forward now, Sarah," I said quietly. "And that took incredible courage. You brought us the final nail in their coffin."

I pulled out my phone, immediately dialing the chief prosecutor's personal cell line.

"Elena?" the prosecutor answered. "What's going on?"

"I have just received direct, high-definition video evidence of Chloe Vance committing aggravated extortion, felony medical endangerment, and premeditated torture against my mother," I reported, my voice lethal in its absolute calm. "This evidence proves clear intent, premeditation, and extreme malice."

There was a sharp intake of breath over the phone. "My God, Elena... where did you get this?"

"I have a key witness currently sitting in my office," I replied. "I want the indictment upgraded immediately. I want life imprisonment without the possibility of parole brought to the grand jury tomorrow morning."

"Consider it done," the prosecutor declared without a second's hesitation. "Bring the drive and the witness to my office at eight o'clock tomorrow."

I hung up the phone, turning to Sarah.

"You're safe now, Sarah," I said gently. "State troopers will escort you home tonight, and you will be fully protected under the state's witness protection protocol. Chloe and Julian are never getting out of prison."

Sarah wiped tears from her face, letting out a massive sigh of relief. "Thank you, Ms. Vance. Thank you."

I walked back out to the living room, stepping quietly toward the sofa where my mother had fallen into a peaceful, quiet sleep, the firelight dancing gently across her serene face.

I pulled the soft blanket up over her shoulders, kissing her forehead lightly.

The monsters had tried to bury her in darkness. But tomorrow, their darkest secrets were going to burn them to ash.
