Chapter 9 - The Rebuilding

By winter, the house on North Pine Street had undergone a complete transformation.

I didn't sell it. Instead, I decided to keep it as my primary residence, completely renovating the interior from top to bottom.

The old, dark wallpaper was stripped away, replaced by clean, modern white walls and minimalist oak trim. The kitchen was entirely gutted and rebuilt with state-of-the-art stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops, and a massive central island where I could cook quiet, peaceful meals without ever hearing a critical voice or a demand for money.

My career continued to soar. I accepted a permanent executive director position with the international engineering and urban development firm I had been contracting with in Singapore, overseeing major infrastructure projects across the region while working primarily out of my downtown office and my riverside apartment.

My relationship with my mother evolved into something distant, formal, and strictly regulated.

About a month after the trial, she had sent me a handwritten letter—a long, rambling, tear-stained apology filled with excuses about how she “just wanted to keep the peace” and “didn't know how bad things had gotten with Brooke.”

I didn't reply with a letter.

I instructed Julian to set up a modest, fixed monthly stipend deposited directly into her bank account—enough to cover her basic living expenses and medication, but completely disconnected from any personal communication or family interaction.

She was taken care of. She was safe.

She was just no longer a part of my daily life.

As for my father, I never heard from him again. Thorne had dropped him as a client within forty-eight hours of the court ruling, and according to public records, he had taken a low-level administrative job at a local hardware store, trying to piece together some semblance of dignity in the twilight of his life.

Sometimes, choices have permanent consequences. And not every story deserves a comfortable reconciliation.
