Chapter 10 - The View from the Top

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, painting the towering glass facade of Whitmore Tower in dazzling shades of gold, rose, and amber.
I stood in the corner executive office on the top floor—the private sanctuary that had once belonged to my aunt Margaret, now fully restored with plush velvet sofas, historic oak bookcases, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park.
A soft knock came at the door.
Nine-year-old Lily and six-year-old Noah walked in, holding brown paper bags filled with fresh warm bagels and hot chocolate from the bakery downstairs.
"Mommy!" Noah cheered, running across the thick rug and throwing his arms around my waist. "Look! The man downstairs gave me two extra chocolate donuts because he said you're the best boss in the building!"
I laughed, scooping Noah up into my arms and kissing his cheek while wrapping my other arm around Lily’s shoulders.
"Did he now?" I smiled, looking down at my daughter. "And what did you tell him, Lily?"
"I told him we already knew that," Lily said proudly, touching the silver pearl earring hanging from my ear. "Because you own the whole building!"
I smiled, pulling both of my children close to my heart, looking out through the high glass windows at the soaring city below us.
Eleven years of marriage had tried to shrink me into a ghost. A husband had tried to throw me out onto the street with two suitcases. A mistress had called me a leech.
And today, standing on the top floor of my own skyscraper, holding my children’s warm hands in mine, I looked out over the world I had claimed as my own.
I was no longer the quiet woman waiting outside the door.

I was Emily Whitmore—mother, empire builder, and master of her own destiny.
And as the golden morning light filled the sky, I knew that our story was just beginning.
