Chapter 5 - Uncovering the RotFor the next two weeks, the Sinclair-Whitaker estate became a fortress. Marcus spent his days locked in his study or at the shipping docks, working around the clock to keep his company afloat despite Arthur Sinclair's financial blockade. Julia no longer worked as a maid; Marcus had officially hired her as his personal administrative assistant, moving her workspace inside the main house where he could ensure her safety.

Sophie spent her afternoons coloring at a small table in the corner of Marcus’s grand office, her purple crayon now accompanied by a box of sixty-four colors Marcus had bought her.

"Marcus," Julia said one afternoon, looking up from a mountain of historical shipping manifests. "I'm looking through these old files from your father's tenure in the nineties. Something doesn't add up about the Sinclair Holdings merger with the Sinclair Maritime branch."

Marcus looked up from his laptop, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. "What do you mean?"

"Arthur Sinclair didn't just invest in your family's company thirty years ago," Julia said, bringing a faded leather ledger over to his desk. "Look at these accounts. Your father was importing heavy machinery from Eastern Europe. But the customs declarations don't match the weight displacement logs of the ships. The ships were carrying significantly more weight than what was declared to the port authorities."

Marcus leaned forward, his analytical mind kicking into high gear. He traced the numbers with his finger. "Weight displacement discrepancies usually mean one thing in maritime logistics. Contraband. Undocumented cargo hidden within the ballast or the structural framing of the containers."

"And look who signed off on the internal audit logs," Julia pointed to a signature at the bottom of the page. "Arthur Sinclair. He wasn't your father's business partner, Marcus. He was his fixer. He used his banking network to clear the money coming from these ghost shipments."

Marcus felt a cold sweat break out on his neck. For decades, his father had been revered as a titan of industry, a man who built an empire from nothing. But the truth was far uglier. The Sinclair fortune was built on a foundation of illegal maritime smuggling, and Arthur Sinclair held the keys to the vault.

"If Arthur is still using our shipping lines for this..." Marcus muttered, his eyes widening. "The Sector 4 harbor project. The one he just forced the city to halt."

"Why would he halt his own project?" Julia asked.

"Because we were excavating the old dry docks," Marcus said, standing up so fast his chair rolled back against the wall. "The old containers from 1996 are still buried beneath the concrete foundation of the old warehouse. If the city inspectors actually dig deep enough, they won't find 'structural discrepancies.' They'll find whatever my father and Arthur hid there thirty years ago."

"We need to get there before Arthur's men do," Julia said, her voice filled with a sudden, fierce determination. "If we find what's down there, Arthur loses his leverage over you. He loses his power to hurt Sophie."

Marcus looked at Julia. She was no longer the quiet, trembling woman who counted backward from ten on his kitchen floor. She was a mother fighting for her child, her eyes burning with a strength that captivated him.

"Get your coat," Marcus said. "We're going to the docks."
