Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

The summer evening over the Atlantic coast was warm, peaceful, and still.
A wide bonfire burned brightly in a stone pit on the private beach behind the Tybee Island house. The crackle of cedar wood mixed rhythmically with the soft, steady lap of ocean waves against the white sand.
Eight-year-old Miles and Owen were sitting on a driftwood log, roasting marshmallows on long wooden sticks, arguing good-naturedly about who could make their marshmallow darker without setting it on fire.
Chloe sat beside Nathan on a beach blanket, carefully painting a sea shell with watercolor paints, her tongue sticking out slightly in intense concentration.
Grace walked down the wooden dune path, carrying a tray of mugs filled with hot cocoa. She set the tray on a flat stone, sitting down beside Nathan on the blanket, pulling a woolen shawl around her shoulders.
Nathan wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side. Grace rested her head comfortably on his shoulder, watching the flames dance in the dark.
"Miles," Nathan called out over the sound of the crackling fire. "Don't drop that marshmallow in the sand again or you'll be eating crunchies."
"It adds flavor, Dad!" Miles shouted back, grinning wildly, his face smeared with chocolate.
Nathan chuckled softly, leaning his cheek against Grace’s hair, breathing in the scent of ocean salt and lavender.
"What are you thinking about?" Grace asked quietly, her fingers intertwining with his on the blanket.
Nathan looked out at the vast, dark ocean stretching into the horizon, then at his three healthy, happy children laughing by the fire, and finally down at the woman holding his hand—the woman who had torn down a corrupt empire with nothing but her truth, her dignity, and her love.
"I was thinking about the letter my grandfather wrote when he established the trust thirty years ago," Nathan murmured softly. "He wrote that a family’s true wealth isn't measured by the buildings that carry its name, but by the honor of the people who carry its blood."
He turned his head, kissing Grace softly on the lips—a kiss filled with seven years of repentance, healing, and unbreakable devotion.

"He was right," Nathan whispered against her lips. "I just had to lose the world to finally find my family."
Grace smiled, resting her face against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart as the stars came out over the ocean, casting a brilliant, eternal light across a home that no storm could ever tear down again.
