Chapter 10 - The Modern Empress

Five years later, the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was filled with a dazzling array of lights, classical music, and the most powerful figures in American society. It was the annual gala for the Romano Foundation—a multi-billion-dollar charitable organization that funded medical research for reproductive health and pediatric trauma centers across the nation.
Dominic Romano sat at the head table, looking magnificent in a bespoke black tuxedo, his hair silvered slightly at the temples, adding an aura of distinguished majesty to his imposing frame.
Sitting beside him was Meline. At twenty-eight, she had become an icon of elegance and power—the undisputed empress of the underworld, respected by the politicians who sought her foundation's support and feared by the syndicates who knew the lethal history of her rise. She wore an exquisite gown of emerald silk, her dark eyes shining with a profound, radiant peace.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies announced from the stage, his voice echoing off the gilded ceilings. "Please welcome our next speaker, the future of the Romano Foundation—Mr. Luca Romano."
The crowd erupted into thundering applause as seventeen-year-old Luca stepped onto the stage. He was tall, broad-shouldered, the perfect fusion of his father’s strength and the confidence he had learned at Meline’s feet. He adjusted the microphone, his blue eyes sweeping across the ballroom until they landed on the head table.
"Thank you all for being here tonight," Luca began, his voice steady, resonant, and mature.
"When I was twelve years old, my world was entirely dark. I thought our family was broken beyond repair. I thought there was no one in the world who could understand the grief my siblings and I were drowning in. And then, a woman walked into our house. She didn't carry our blood, and she didn't have a legal obligation to love us. But she looked at our broken pieces and decided we were worth fighting for. She became our mother, our shield, and our guide. Today, our foundation is launching a new initiative—The Meline Romano Research Pavilion—to ensure that no woman is ever told she is worthless simply because her path to motherhood looks different from the norm. This is for you, Mom."
The ballroom erupted into a standing ovation, many of the guests wiping tears from their eyes.
Meline covered her mouth, her eyes overflowing with hot, emotional tears of pure, unadulterated joy. She looked at Luca on the stage, then at fourteen-year-old Matteo who was clapping proudly beside her, then at eleven-year-old Sophia and nine-year-old Bianca who were cheering from the adjacent seats.
They were her children. Every single one of them. Not by blood, not by biology, but by the sacred, unbreakable bond of a mother who had walked through fire to claim them.
Dominic reached across the table, his massive, scarred hand wrapping around hers, his fingers interlocking with a desperate, eternal intensity. He leaned closer, his blue eyes burning with a love that had conquered an empire.

"You did it, my love," Dominic whispered against her cheek. "You made us whole."
Meline looked at her husband, then at her beautiful, vibrant family, and smiled. The empty womb that her parents had called a curse had been the exact key that opened the door to a kingdom of pure love. She was no longer broken. She was no longer worthless. She was Meline Romano, and her empire was eternal.
