CHAPTER 5 – The Choice at Midnight (The Extraction and Betrayal Twist)

The door handle turned slowly.

Not rushed.

Not forced.

Controlled.

Like whoever was on the other side already knew the house belonged to them.

Victoria didn’t move.

She couldn’t.

Her body had become something separate from her mind—locked between instinct and disbelief, between the man she had married and the man her father had sent to take her away.

Daniel Reeve stepped forward.

Marcus Hammond did not stop him.

That, more than anything, made Victoria’s stomach drop.

Because Marcus always stopped things.

Always redirected them.

Always controlled the outcome.

But now he was standing aside like a man watching a fire he had already decided not to extinguish.

“Victoria,” Daniel said quietly, “you need to come with me now.”

Her voice came out thin.

“If I go with you… where am I going?”

Daniel didn’t hesitate.

“Somewhere the system can’t predict.”

Another twist of the handle outside.

A faint metallic click followed.

Lock disengaging.

Marcus finally spoke.

“Three minutes is gone,” he said. “They’re inside the perimeter.”

Victoria turned toward him.

“Who is they?” she demanded again, voice breaking.

Marcus looked at her—not like a husband anymore.

Like a man making a final calculation.

Then he answered.

“Internal enforcement.”

Daniel exhaled sharply.

“So they escalated faster than expected.”

Marcus gave a short nod.

“That means she’s no longer just a target,” he said. “She’s a priority breach.”

Victoria staggered back.

“I’m not a breach,” she whispered.

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

Then said something that made her blood run cold.

“To them, you are a variable that stopped behaving correctly.”

The door clicked again.

One final step before entry.

Daniel grabbed Victoria’s wrist gently—but firmly.

“We leave now,” he said.

Marcus stepped forward one last time.

Not to stop them.

But to intercept something else.

He reached into his jacket.

Daniel immediately raised his device.

“Don’t,” Daniel warned.

Marcus didn’t stop.

He pulled out a small black card.

No markings.

Just a strip of embedded code glinting under the hallway light.

He placed it on the floor.

Then looked at Daniel.

“She cannot be extracted through the front route,” Marcus said.

Daniel frowned.

“You’re changing the plan?”

“I’m correcting it,” Marcus replied.

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“What plan?”

Marcus didn’t answer her immediately.

Instead, he looked at Daniel.

“You didn’t come here alone,” Marcus said.

Daniel didn’t react.

Marcus nodded slightly.

“I knew you wouldn’t.”

Daniel’s grip tightened.

Marcus continued.

“There’s a second extraction team outside,” he said. “Not yours. Not mine. Someone else’s.”

Daniel’s eyes sharpened.

“That’s impossible.”

Marcus smiled faintly.

“It was,” he said. “Until she woke up this morning.”

Victoria felt the room tilt again.

“What are you talking about?” she whispered.

Marcus finally turned to her fully.

And his voice softened again.

Almost painfully.

“I never stopped protecting you,” he said. “Even when you thought I was the threat.”

A loud metallic snap echoed from the front door.

The lock gave.

Daniel pulled Victoria closer.

“Move,” he said.

They started toward the back hallway.

But Marcus stepped in front of them.

Blocking—not aggressively.

Deliberately.

Daniel froze.

Victoria’s breath caught.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You don’t have clearance for the hospital wing access codes,” he said.

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

“You do.”

Marcus nodded once.

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said slowly:

“You’re still inside.”

Marcus didn’t deny it.

Victoria’s voice shook.

“Inside what?”

Marcus finally looked at her.

And the truth came out like a fracture splitting open.

“The same system that marked you for removal,” he said quietly, “is the one I was built to navigate.”

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“You were a handler asset,” he said.

Marcus nodded again.

“For six years.”

Victoria felt sick.

“No…” she whispered.

Marcus stepped closer to her.

“I was assigned to monitor proximity,” he said. “And intervene when necessary.”

Daniel interrupted sharply.

“And the marriage?”

Marcus hesitated.

Then answered.

“A long-term immersion contract.”

The words destroyed something invisible in the air.

Victoria’s knees buckled slightly.
