Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Showdown

The Fairfield County Courthouse was packed to capacity on Thursday morning.

Reporters, local socialites, and curious citizens squeezed into the wooden pews of Courtroom 3B. Catherine Vance sat at the defense table wearing a dark suit, trying to project regal dignity, though her hands trembled as she pulled at her pearl necklace. Beside her sat Gregory, looking gaunt, his eyes sunken, wearing a cheap suit he had bought off the rack after his luxury wardrobe was locked inside the Maplewood house.

At the plaintiff’s table sat Elise.

She wore a sharp, tailored navy suit, her hair styled neatly, her posture erect and commanding. She looked nothing like the exhausted, frost-covered woman who had been humiliated at the birthday party six days ago. Beside her sat Naomi Bell, surrounded by five thick leather-bound binders of forensic evidence.

Judge Sarah Jenkins took the bench, slamming her heavy wooden gavel down.

"We are here in the matter of Thorne v. Vance et al., regarding emergency property rights, corporate embezzlement, and asset recovery," Judge Jenkins declared, her sharp eyes scanning the room.

Catherine’s attorney, a high-priced defender named Richard Sterling, immediately stood up.

"Your Honor," Sterling began smoothly. "My clients have been subjected to an illegal, tyrannical eviction. Mrs. Catherine Vance is an elderly woman of high social standing who contributed significantly to the maintenance of the subject property. This entire lawsuit is a frivolous attempt by a bitter ex-spouse to destroy a prominent family."

"Frivolous, Mr. Sterling?" Judge Jenkins raised an eyebrow. "Let us review the evidence presented by the plaintiff."

Naomi stood up, approaching the podium with cool, absolute authority.

"Your Honor," Naomi said, her voice carrying clearly through the silent courtroom. "We submit into evidence Exhibit A: the original certified land grant from 2014 funded by Margaret Thorne’s estate. Exhibit B: the forensic handwriting analysis proving Gregory Vance forged Elise Thorne’s signature on three separate financial quitclaims. And Exhibit C: the bank records showing $1.2 million systematically drained from Elise’s trust account to pay for Catherine Vance’s personal credit cards and luxury vacations."

A collective gasp swept through the gallery. Reporters began scribbling frantically in their notebooks.

Sterling went pale, turning to glare at Gregory. "You told me the trust was joint property!" he whispered furiously.

"Your Honor!" Catherine blurted out, standing up from her seat despite her lawyer’s warning. "That girl came to my family with nothing! She lived off my son’s hard work! I gave her a home! I let her live in my house!"

Judge Jenkins slammed her gavel down with thunderous force. "Sit down, Mrs. Vance! One more outburst and I will hold you in direct contempt of court!"

Catherine sank back into her chair, her face turning purple with rage.

Judge Jenkins reviewed the documents for ten silent minutes. The only sound in the courtroom was the turning of paper.

Finally, Judge Jenkins looked up, her gaze fixing on Gregory and Catherine with unyielding severity.

"The court finds that the property located at 412 Maplewood Lane is—and has always been—the sole, unencumbered pre-marital property of Elise Thorne," Judge Jenkins ruled. "The fraudulent quitclaim filed by Gregory Vance is hereby nullified and struck from public records."

Elise let out a long, quiet breath.

"Furthermore," Judge Jenkins continued, "based on the clear evidence of financial fraud, this court orders an immediate freeze on all personal and commercial bank accounts belonging to Gregory Vance and Catherine Vance. A court-appointed receiver will immediately liquidate Gregory Vance’s commercial assets to restore the $1.2 million stolen from the Margaret Thorne Trust."

Gregory slumped forward, burying his head in his hands.

"And finally," Judge Jenkins concluded, looking straight at Catherine. "Mrs. Catherine Vance, you are ordered to issue a full, public retraction of your defamatory statements to The Sedona Daily within twenty-four hours, or face immediate incarceration for perjury."
