Chapter 3 - The Web of Deception

The digital screen on the wall flickered to life, showing the bold, red banner of Gotham News Network: VANCE HEIRESS KIDNAPPING SCANDAL: HERO OR FRAUD?

On the screen sat Ron Mercer, wearing a hasty, crumpled suit, flanked by a sleazy, high-profile defense attorney named Richard Sterling. Ron had a handkerchief in his hand, dabbing at his dry eyes while putting on a performance worthy of an Oscar.

"I tried to stop her!" Ron lied through his teeth into the camera lens. "Lena Barrett had been acting suspicious for weeks! She kept talking about how rich the Vance family was! Yesterday, the little girl conveniently showed up at my cart—my cart—and Lena immediately began feeding her, keeping her there until Mr. Vance showed up with his security team! It was a setup! A staged rescue to extort millions from the family!"

In the drawing room, Lena stood up so fast her chair nearly tipped backward. "He’s lying! That’s completely insane! I didn't even know who Lily was!"

"Of course he’s lying," Marcus said calmly, though the vein pulsing at his temple betrayed the fury boiling inside him. "Mercer is backed into a corner. He knows he’s facing total financial destruction and federal labor charges, so he’s trying to flip the narrative and make himself look like a whistleblower."

Evelyn watched the broadcast closely, her legal mind working at maximum speed. "Sterling is Mercer’s lawyer. Sterling works almost exclusively for Apex Hospitality’s majority owner... Harrison Drake."

Marcus’s eyes darkened instantly at the mention of the name. "Harrison Drake."

Lena looked between Marcus and Evelyn, confused. "Who is Harrison Drake?"

"Harrison Drake is my primary corporate rival," Marcus explained, walking over to the window, his hands thrust deep into his coat pockets. "He’s been trying to execute a hostile takeover of Vance Enterprises' commercial division for eighteen months. He owns the controlling stock in Apex Hospitality—the firm that sub-leased the cart permits to Mercer."

Evelyn connected the dots with terrifying clarity. "Harrison Drake used his security connections to orchestrate the distraction that allowed Lily to wander off from her school yesterday. He wanted to hold the girl or use her disappearance to destabilize our stock price before the board meeting on Friday. But when Lena saved Lily on the sidewalk, Drake’s plan fell apart."

"So now," Lena realized, her blood running cold, "Drake is using Ron Mercer to frame me... to make it look like the Vance family is rewarding a kidnapper, ruining your public credibility before the stock vote?"

"Precisely," Evelyn said grimly. "The media is already spinning it. If the public and the board believe that Marcus hired a fake hero to cover up a security failure, the stock will plummet by twenty percent by tomorrow morning."

Lena felt a cold weight settle in her stomach. Two hours ago, she was just a broke girl on a sidewalk. Now, she was caught in the crosshairs of a multi-billion-dollar corporate war.

"Mr. Vance," Lena said, her voice shaking slightly, but her eyes resolute. "I will go on television right now. I’ll tell the truth. I’ll show my bank statements, my mother’s hospital bills, everything! I have nothing to hide!"

Marcus turned around and looked at her. The determination in her eyes moved him deeply. Most people in her position would have run away or demanded protection money. Instead, she was ready to step into the line of fire for a family she had just met.

"No, Lena," Marcus said gently, taking her by the shoulders. "You don't step into the mud with pigs like Harrison Drake and Ron Mercer. That’s what they want. They want a messy media war."

"Then what are we going to do?" Lena asked.

Marcus offered a dark, lethal smile—the smile of a predator who had just walked his prey into a trap.

"Drake thinks he’s playing chess," Marcus said coldly. "He thinks because you’re a former street vendor, you’re a weak link. He doesn't know that Evelyn has full high-definition video and audio feeds from every traffic camera on that block, courtesy of the Mayor’s office."

Marcus pulled out his phone and made a single call.

"Sam," Marcus commanded into the speaker. "Bring the mobile command unit to the house. And release the full, unedited audio of Ron Mercer throwing my daughter's food in the trash directly to the Associated Press. Let the world hear what kind of man Harrison Drake is protecting."
