Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

By sunrise, Calvin was back at his penthouse in the Gold Coast, but he hadn't slept a wink.

The large dining room table was buried under mountains of documents. He had summoned his personal legal team, a private investigative group, and his head of security at four in the morning.

Arthur Pendelton, an elderly attorney who had managed the Monroe family’s personal estate for forty years, sat across from Calvin, reviewing a stack of bank transfers and corporate filings that had been pulled from Marcus Vance’s office server overnight.

"It’s worse than you thought, Calvin," Arthur said, taking off his spectacles and rubbing his tired eyes. "Marcus didn't just fabricate the extortion claims. He actively blocked Miss Quinn from receiving any community assistance or medical relief in Cook County."

Calvin looked up from his computer, his face pale and drawn. "What do you mean?"

"When Miss Quinn applied for temporary disability benefits during her high-risk pregnancy eighteen months ago," Arthur explained, tapping a document on the table, "Marcus used a subsidiary logistics firm owned by Monroe Development to flag her Social Security number for potential payroll fraud. He claimed she was still an active employee earning a salary she never received. Her state benefits were denied automatically."

Calvin felt a cold, sharp nausea rise in his stomach. "He starved her out."

"He attempted to force her out of the state," Arthur clarified grimly. "He assumed that if life became difficult enough in Chicago, she would relocate back to her family in rural Indiana, far away from your social circle and the Stanton family’s radar."

Calvin buried his face in his hands. Every revelation was a new depth of horror. While he had been attending galas, selecting engagement rings, and dining in five-star restaurants, the mother of his children had been systematically targeted by his own company, forced to survive on minimal wages while raising twins in a drafty apartment.

"Where is Marcus now?" Calvin asked, his voice dangerously low.

"He checked into a hotel near O'Hare early this morning," his security chief, Dan, reported. "He’s booked on a flight to London at three this afternoon. He knows the internal audit is coming."

"Cancel his access to all corporate accounts immediately," Calvin commanded, standing up from the table. "And file an emergency injunction with the state attorney’s office to freeze his personal assets. He doesn't leave this city until he answers for every document he forged."

"And what about Miss Quinn?" Arthur asked gently. "Legally speaking, she has grounds for a massive civil suit against Monroe Development for harassment and intentional infliction of emotional distress. If this goes to court, the publicity will destroy the company's valuation."

Calvin looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the grey skyline of Chicago.

"Let it," Calvin said flatly. "If the company has to burn to make things right for Aara and my daughters, then hand me the match."

He grabbed his coat and keys from the counter.

"Where are you going, sir?" Dan asked.

"To buy two cribs," Calvin said. "And to hire the best pediatric medical team in the city."
