CHAPTER 5 – The Return of Rob Palmer

The sound from inside the house didn’t repeat.

But it didn’t need to.

Everyone heard it.

Claire stood frozen with her mother’s letter still trembling in her hands, the ink now feeling heavier than paper should ever feel. Beneath the house. Something hidden. Something they were all trying to reach—or protect.

Then Evan shifted his stance slightly, as if recalculating the situation.

Daniel’s eyes stayed locked on the front door.

Ruth looked like she wanted to pray.

And then headlights cut through the dark road outside the gate.

Bright. Fast. Unmistakable.

A car turned sharply onto Willow Lane, tires hissing over damp gravel. It slowed abruptly in front of the house, engine still running.

Claire felt something in her chest tighten before she even saw who stepped out.

She already knew.

The driver’s door opened.

And Rob Palmer stood there.

For a second, nobody spoke.

The wind picked up slightly, moving through the trees like something unsettled had just arrived with him.

Rob looked around—at Daniel, at Evan, at Ruth—then finally at Claire.

And his face hardened immediately.

“What the hell is going on?” he demanded.

Claire didn’t move.

She didn’t answer.

Not because she couldn’t.

Because for the first time, she didn’t owe him one.

Rob took a step forward, rainwater from earlier still clinging to his coat sleeves. “You disappear from the highway, stop answering your phone, and I find you in some… backwoods property surrounded by strangers?”

Evan glanced at Daniel. “This is your husband?”

Daniel didn’t respond.

Claire finally spoke, voice steady but cold. “You left me on the side of a road.”

Rob scoffed. “Don’t start that again. You walked off like some kind of—”

“Say it,” Claire interrupted.

The sharpness in her voice made even Ruth blink.

Rob hesitated.

Then dismissed it with a wave. “Whatever this drama is, we’re going home.”

He stepped closer to the gate.

Daniel moved instantly—one step forward, blocking him without touching him.

“You’re not authorized to enter the property,” Daniel said.

Rob stared at him like he had just been spoken to in a foreign language. “Excuse me?”

Evan sighed slightly. “This is getting complicated.”

Rob turned toward him. “Who are you?”

“Legal consultant,” Evan said again, almost tired of the phrase now.

Rob gave a short laugh. “Of course. Let me guess—you all work for Lydia?”

At that name, Claire’s attention sharpened instantly.

Daniel exchanged a glance with Evan.

Ruth looked down.

Claire stepped forward slightly. “What do you know about Lydia?”

Rob turned to her, irritation already rising. “I know she’s the only one in your family who can handle anything without turning it into a disaster.”

That landed differently now.

Not like an insult.

Like an alignment.

Claire studied him. “You’ve spoken to her.”

Rob shrugged. “Of course I have. She told me what’s been going on with this house.”

Silence dropped instantly.

Daniel’s voice went colder. “She contacted you?”

Rob frowned. “She didn’t contact me—she explained. After you started obsessing over this property nonsense.”

Claire’s expression tightened. “What nonsense?”

Rob gestured toward the house. “This. All of this. Your mother’s place, the money you keep sending, the paranoia about paperwork. Lydia said you were getting confused after everything that happened.”

Claire felt something shift inside her.

Not confusion.

Clarity forming.

“She said that,” Claire repeated slowly.

Rob nodded. “She was worried about you.”

A long, unbearable pause followed.

Then Claire spoke quietly.

“Did she tell you I was unstable?”

Rob sighed. “She didn’t say it like that.”

Daniel muttered under his breath, “That’s exactly what she said.”

Rob snapped his head toward him. “Stay out of this.”

Evan raised a hand slightly. “No one is staying out of this.”

Rob looked between them, increasingly irritated. “Fine. Then someone explain why my wife is standing outside a locked house arguing with strangers instead of coming home.”

Claire stepped closer to the gate.

And for the first time, Rob noticed something different in her.

She wasn’t shrinking.

“I’m not going home,” she said.

Rob blinked. “What?”

Claire’s voice stayed steady. “Not with you.”

A silence followed so complete even the insects seemed to stop.

Rob let out a short laugh, but it didn’t carry confidence anymore. “Claire, don’t do this. Not here. Not in front of—”

“In front of who?” she interrupted. “People who know what’s going on?”

Rob’s jaw tightened. “You don’t know what’s going on.”

Claire lifted the letter in her hand.

“I know my mother warned me about people changing what she left behind.”

Rob looked at the paper briefly.

Then dismissed it. “That could mean anything.”

Evan stepped forward slightly. “Actually, it doesn’t.”

Rob turned on him sharply. “Who asked you?”

Evan met his gaze calmly. “Your wife did.”

That word—wife—landed strangely now.

Claire didn’t correct it.

She just watched Rob.

And for the first time, Rob seemed to notice he wasn’t controlling the room anymore.

He shifted slightly. “Lydia told me this property was under review. That there were debts tied to it. That Claire needed time away from it.”

Claire’s eyes narrowed. “Debts?”

Rob nodded quickly. “Yes. She said your mother had unresolved financial obligations. That the house was basically a liability.”

Daniel shook his head slightly. “That’s not consistent with any registry data.”

Evan added quietly, “It’s consistent with manipulation.”

Rob frowned. “Excuse me?”

Claire took a step forward.

“Did Lydia tell you to leave me on the road?” she asked.

Rob hesitated.

That hesitation was small.

But it was enough.

Claire saw it.

Rob looked away briefly. “She said you were overwhelmed. That a break might help you reset.”

Claire’s voice dropped.

“A break,” she repeated.

Rob rubbed his face. “You’re twisting this. I was trying to help you.”

Claire stared at him for a long moment.

Then said softly:

“You abandoned me.”

Rob opened his mouth—

But no words came fast enough.

And in that gap, something inside Claire finally settled.

Not anger.

Understanding.

Behind them, the house creaked again.

This time, louder.

From inside.

Directly beneath the floorboards.

Everyone turned toward it at once.

Even Rob.

And in that moment, Claire realized something that made her blood run cold:

May you like

Whatever was inside that house…

was reacting to them being here.
