Chapter 4 - The DNA Trap

By Thursday morning, the public humiliation of Adrian Vale had reached international financial news outlets.
While Vale Industries stock staged a dramatic recovery—rebounding forty percent after the announcement that Claire Whitmore had been appointed Interim Chairwoman of the Board—Adrian was staying in a third-rate airport hotel near San Diego, using a personal credit card with a five-thousand-dollar limit that Claire’s lawyers had deliberately left unblocked.
It was a final, degrading insult: leaving him just enough money to buy fast food and pay for a budget hotel room, but not enough to hire a top-tier legal defense team.
At 10:00 a.m., his hotel room door opened.
Ethan Cole stepped inside, carrying a thick yellow envelope and a silver aluminum brief case. Ethan looked exhausted, his tie loosened, his eyes ringed with dark circles.
"You brought the documents?" Adrian asked, jumping up from the edge of the unmade bed.
"I brought what’s left of your personal legal files," Ethan said, placing the envelope on the small laminate desk. "And I brought the preliminary disclosure files sent over by Claire’s legal team this morning."
Adrian snatched the yellow envelope, tearing it open frantically. "Where is the custody filing? Did she request sole custody of Noah?"
"She didn't just request sole custody," Ethan said softly. "She filed a petition for full termination of parental rights based on gross financial negligence and moral abandonment."
"Moral abandonment?!" Adrian slammed the paper onto the desk. "I’m his father! I bought him every toy he ever wanted! I put twenty million dollars into a trust fund for his college education!"
"The twenty million dollars you put into that trust fund," Ethan pointed out gently, "was drawn from an account funded entirely by Whitmore dividends. Claire’s lawyers proved to the family court judge yesterday that you haven't contributed a single dollar of non-patent revenue to Noah's care since he was born."
Adrian paced back and forth across the tiny hotel room, his breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps. "What about Savannah? She’s six months pregnant with my second child! I still have a family! I’ll rebuild! I’ll start a new company!"
Ethan looked at Adrian with a look of profound, devastating pity.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a single sheet of white medical paper.
"What is that?" Adrian asked, his eyes narrowing.
"While you were sitting in this hotel room yesterday," Ethan explained, "Savannah Reed was visited by two investigators from the District Attorney’s fraud division. It turns out Savannah has been under federal investigation for two years for art market tax fraud."
Adrian’s stomach did a slow, violent flip. "What does that have to do with her pregnancy?"
"To avoid federal indictment," Ethan continued, placing the medical sheet on the desk, "Savannah agreed to cooperate fully with Claire’s forensic accounting team. She voluntarily provided medical records and DNA profiles."
Adrian slowly stepped toward the desk. His eyes dropped to the official laboratory header at the top of the page: PACIFIC FORENSIC GENETICS LABORATORY.
He read the bold text halfway down the page:
PRENATAL PATERNITY TESTING RESULT:
SUBJECT: SAVANNAH REED (MOTHER)
ALLEGED FATHER: ADRIAN VALE
PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 0.00%
Adrian stared at the numbers.
0.00%.
"The biological father," Ethan said quietly into the heavy silence of the room, "is Julian Vance. Samuel Vance’s thirty-two-year-old son—the senior acquisitions VP at Vale Industries whom you promoted last year."
Adrian’s vision went completely black around the edges.
He fell backward onto the bed, his lungs refusing to pull in air.
Savannah hadn't just been his mistress. She had been sleeping with his senior VP—the son of his lead independent director—while using Adrian’s credit cards to pay for luxury apartments, designer clothes, and private gallery acquisitions, all while telling him he was going to have another son.
"Julian Vance was feeding insider trading information to Savannah," Ethan added, dropping the final nail into the coffin. "They were planning to use Savannah’s pregnancy to squeeze an eight-million-dollar cash settlement out of you during the divorce, which Julian was going to use to cover his offshore gambling debts in Macau."
Adrian sat on the edge of the cheap hotel bed, his hands pressed against his face, tears of absolute, crushing realization finally breaking through his pride.

Every single person in his life—his mistress, his board members, his senior executives—had been using him, lying to him, and bleeding him dry because of his staggering, blind vanity.
And the only person who had ever truly protected him, the only person who had kept his empire running while asking for nothing in return, was the quiet, soft-spoken wife he had locked out of his heart while leaving her to raise their son alone.
