Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Four weeks after Trevor began his court-ordered maintenance service at the Marshall Gallery, the legal dominoes set in motion by Roman Mercer continued to fall across the city.
In a high-rise office building six blocks away, Chloe’s father—billionaire developer Arthur Vance-Cross—sat across from his senior financial advisors. His face was gray, his desk covered in frantic balance-sheet audits.
"What do you mean the underwriting team backed out?!" Arthur roared, slamming his fist onto his glass desk. "The IPO was scheduled for next Tuesday! We've spent forty million dollars on marketing alone!"
His lead accountant wiped sweat from his forehead. "Sir... when Mercer Capital pulled their institutional liquidity guarantee from First Northern, it triggered an automatic risk review by the SEC. They audited our supply chain debt... and discovered that thirty percent of our sub-contractor liabilities were tied to shell companies owned by Richard Sterling and Trevor Hale."
Arthur’s mouth fell open. "Trevor Hale? That worthless, disgraced associate my daughter was going to marry?!"
"Yes, sir," the accountant said nervously. "Hale used your daughter’s name to secure fraudulent indemnity waivers for three of his offshore holdings. The SEC has halted the IPO indefinitely pending a federal investigation."
Arthur fell back into his executive chair, burying his face in his hands. He had spent thirty years building his corporate empire, only to have it crippled because he allowed his daughter to bring a arrogant, predatory climber into their family circle.
Ten minutes later, Chloe walked into her father’s office, wearing a modest black dress, her eyes red and swollen from days of crying.
"Dad..." she whispered. "Did... did the bank call?"
Arthur looked at his daughter. The anger in his eyes was replaced by a cold, heavy sadness.
"The IPO is canceled, Chloe," Arthur said softly. "The firm is forced into restructuring. We're liquidating the Aspen estate and the yacht to cover the legal liabilities."
Chloe gasped, holding her hand to her chest. "No... Dad, no! That’s not fair! We didn't do anything wrong! It was Trevor! It was all Trevor!"
"You brought him to our table, Chloe," Arthur said quietly, looking out the floor-to-ceiling window at the Chicago skyline. "You watched him treat people like garbage, and you laughed because you thought his arrogance made him powerful. You didn't care about his character as long as he gave you status."
He turned back to face her. "I spoke with Roman Mercer’s legal representative this morning. Mr. Mercer has agreed not to press secondary civil charges against our family company... on one condition."
Chloe leaned forward, desperate. "What condition?"
"You will volunteer three days a week at the Eleanor Bennett Women’s Shelter," Arthur read from a memo on his desk. "Working in the intake department... assisting women who are trying to rebuild their lives after escaping abusive relationships."
Chloe stared at her father in total disbelief. "You want me... to work in a shelter? For poor people?"
May you like
"It’s not a request, Chloe," Arthur said firmly, picking up a pen. "If you refuse, Mr. Mercer releases the audit files to the federal prosecutor, and our family enters bankruptcy by Friday."
Chloe sank into a leather chair, her head spinning as the reality of her new world closed in around her. The shallow, glossy life of luxury parties, designer clothes, and unearned privilege she had taken for granted was gone. For the first time in her life, she was going to have to learn what real struggle looked like—and who the people she had looked down on actually were.
