Chapter 9 - The Castle on the Hill

The nursery at the Madison Park estate had been completely transformed over the past month. The cold, sterile white walls had been painted a warm, soft lavender, and the corners were filled with bookshelves packed with children’s literature, botanical guides, and wooden toys.

Lila lay in the center of a large, plush canopy bed, her dark hair splayed across the pink pillow, her small hands clutching a plush toy bear Lucas had bought for her on Tuesday. Clara sat beside her, her face relaxed, reading softly from an old book about wildflowers.

Lucas knocked gently on the open doorframe.

Lila’s eyes popped open, a bright, joyous smile instantly lighting up her face as she saw him. "Dad!"

The word still made Lucas's heart skip a beat, an electric shock of pure, unadulterated happiness that money could never replicate. He walked over to the bed, setting the milk and cookies on the nightstand, and sat on the edge of the mattress.

"How’s my favorite artist doing?" Lucas asked, gently tapping her nose, making her giggle.

"Mama says we can go to the Olympic National Park next weekend to see the giant trees," Lila said, her eyes wide with excitement. "She said they have moss that hangs down like green velvet!"

"We can go wherever you want, sweetheart," Lucas said, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. He looked up at Clara, whose hazel eyes were watching him with a deep, quiet gratitude that held none of the old sorrow.

"Desmond told me about the Vance meeting," Clara whispered, her hand coming down to rest over Lucas’s on the quilt. Her skin was still slightly rough from the years of hard work, but to Lucas, it felt softer than the finest silk. "Is it over?"

"It’s over, Clara," Lucas said, his fingers intertwining with hers. "The company is secure. The people who hurt us are gone. There are no more secrets. No more threats."

Lila reached over, her small hands wrapping around both of their joined palms, completing the circle. "Are we going to stay in the castle now, Dad?"

Lucas looked around the beautiful, warm room, then down at his daughter and the woman he had loved since he was a boy with nothing but dreams in his pockets. He realized that the castle wasn't the billionaire tower downtown, and it wasn't this mansion in Madison Park.

The castle was right here, contained within the simple, profound boundary of three people who had survived the storm to find each other again.

"Yes, Lila," Lucas said, his voice thick with a deep, enduring peace as he leaned down to kiss her forehead. "We’re staying in the castle forever."
