Chapter 9 - The Purging of the Palace

The heavy iron gates of the Herrera estate in San Pedro Garza García swung open smoothly, no longer making the aggressive, mechanical screech that had defined the night of the winter storm. The long gravel driveway was lined with fresh winter jasmine and rose bushes, their white and green colors glistening under the brilliant afternoon sun.
The entire household staff—over fifteen cooks, gardeners, maids, and drivers—stood in a neat, respectful line along the grand stone porch. At the front of the line stood Sofia, the head housekeeper, her hands folded neatly over her crisp white apron, her eyes shining with tears of joy.
The black executive sedan stopped at the base of the steps. Santiago stepped out first, dressed in a simple, elegant dark suit, and walked around to open the passenger door. He helped Mariana step out onto the driveway. She looked beautiful, wearing a soft, cream-colored wool coat, her face glowing with health and dignity as she held tiny Valentina securely against her chest.
The moment Mariana’s boots touched the stone porch, Sofia and the rest of the staff bowed their heads in deep, genuine reverence.
"Welcome home, Doña Mariana," Sofia said, her voice trembling with emotion as she stepped forward to hand Mariana a traditional silver tray containing the master keys to the entire estate. "The house has been completely deep-cleaned. Every single piece of clothing, jewelry, and furniture that belonged to the former occupants has been packed into crates and moved to the federal storage facility. There is nothing left inside but the items you chose."
Mariana looked at the keys, then up at the grand stone columns that had once looked like a fortress of exclusion. She did not take the keys from the tray; instead, she reached out and took Sofia’s calloused hands into her own, pulling the older woman into a warm, genuine embrace.
"Thank you, Sofia," Mariana said softly, her voice echoing clearly across the silent courtyard. "You were the only one who tried to leave a blanket for me near the garage that night before they took your access code away. I will never forget your kindness. You are not a servant in this house anymore; you are the director of our home."
Sofia wept openly, nodding her head as the rest of the staff clapped softly in approval.
Santiago walked up beside his wife, his hand resting gently against the small of her back as they walked through the open front doors into the grand entryway. The heavy burgundy velvet curtains were gone, replaced by light, sheer cream linens that let the brilliant Mexican sunlight flood through the high arched windows, illuminating the Carrara marble in a warm, golden glow.
The air no longer smelled of expensive, stale whiskey and oppressive vanity; it smelled of citrus, fresh pine, and the clean promise of a new beginning.

"It’s beautiful, Santi," Mariana whispered, looking up at the high ceiling where the crystal chandelier caught the light, throwing tiny rainbows across the clean walls.
"It is your home, Mariana," Santiago said, leaning down to press a kiss against her temple. "A home built on honor, not on lies. Let’s go show our daughter her new garden."
