Chapter 6 - The Dark Counter-Attack

The institutional defeat in the courtroom forced the Hale family into a dark, desperate territory. With their corporate accounts frozen and their political alliances crumbling under the weight of public scrutiny, Arthur Hale decided to use the oldest weapon in the corruption handbook: intimidation.
On Thursday night, the secure shelter where Mariana was staying received an anonymous delivery. It was a small, unmarked wooden box left on the doorstep. Inside was a single, scorched leather kitchen glove, wrapped in a copy of that morning's newspaper with Mariana's face circled in red ink. Written across the page in thick, black marker were five words: Celaya is a small town.
"They're targeting your mother, Mariana," Officer Lucia Hernandez said, walking into the shelter’s secure office where Natalia and Mariana were analyzing the threat. "We’ve already dispatched a state security detail to her house in Celaya, but the local police force there has deep historical ties to Don Ramiro’s old construction projects. We can't guarantee her safety if she stays in the state."
Mariana’s right hand clenched into a tight ball. "My mother has a heart condition, Lucia. She can't handle this. This is exactly what Adrian wanted. He wants me to drop the federal fraud charges to protect her."
"We don't drop anything," Natalia said, her eyes flashing with an icy determination. "If Arthur Hale wants to play cartel-style tactics, we treat them like a cartel. Julian Vance, the federal financial investigator assigned to our case, just discovered something massive in the Panama digital dump. The offshore accounts weren't just used for tax evasion. Two of those accounts were used to funnel regular monthly payments to an unlisted real estate corporation owned by... Judge Arthur Hale himself."
Mariana looked up, her breath catching. "The brother? The appellate judge?"
"Yes," Natalia smiled, a cold, predatory expression. "He wasn't just helping his brother Ramiro out of family loyalty; he was a silent partner in the infrastructure fraud. Every time Don Ramiro used substandard materials on public roads, Arthur ensured that any legal challenges from the state auditors were dismissed at the appellate level. He’s not a protector anymore, Mariana. He’s a target."

"What do we do?" Mariana asked.
"We go to Mexico City," Natalia said, closing her laptop with a sharp snap. "The local jurisdiction is too compromised by the Hale network. We are taking this data straight to the Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) and the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit. By tomorrow morning, the Hale family won't just be facing a state judge in Querétaro. They will be facing the full weight of the federal government."
