CHAPTER 10– THE LAST WAR OF THE OLD WOMAN

The first thing Evelyn Cross ever taught me was this:

A person does not become dangerous because they have power.

They become dangerous when they have something to lose.

For most of my life, I had been powerful.

I had money.

Influence.

Fear.

A reputation that made people lower their voices when they said my name.

But none of those things had ever truly made me dangerous.

Not compared to now.

Because now, I had Lily.

And Evelyn knew it.

That was why she had waited.

She didn't come after my empire.

She didn't attack my wealth.

She didn't expose my past.

She waited until I had built something I loved.

Something I would die protecting.

Then she came.

I spent the entire night in my office.

The same room where I had once made decisions that changed people's lives.

The same room where I had signed agreements, ended alliances, and buried enemies.

But that night, there were no weapons on my desk.

No contracts.

No strategies.

Only memories.

I opened the old files.

The ones I promised myself I would never look at again.

Twenty-five years of secrets.

Twenty-five years of lies.

And one name that connected everything.

Evelyn Cross.

She wasn't just my mentor.

She wasn't just my former ally.

She was the architect of my entire life.

The woman who took a frightened young girl and turned her into someone the world feared.

I owed her everything.

And I hated her for it.

Because the hardest betrayal is not when an enemy hurts you.

It is when someone who built you decides to destroy you.

At sunrise, Adrian found me.

He stood in the doorway.

"You knew."

I looked up.

"What?"

"About my father."

I said nothing.

His jaw tightened.

"You knew Daniel had another family."

"No."

"Then what did you know?"

I stared at the documents.

"That Daniel was hiding something."

"That's not an answer."

"No."

I closed the file.

"It's the truth."

Adrian stepped inside.

"For years, I believed you were the reason my mother suffered."

The honesty surprised me.

"I believed you took everything from us."

I looked at him.

"And now?"

He looked toward Lily's room.

"Now I think Daniel took everything from everyone."

Silence.

A painful truth.

Because Daniel had always been the center of every disaster.

He was charming.

Intelligent.

Ambitious.

But underneath all of that...

He was afraid.

Afraid of being powerless.

Afraid of being forgotten.

And afraid of people like Evelyn.

"Your father wasn't the mastermind," I said.

Adrian looked at me.

"Who was?"

I answered quietly.

"The person who taught him how to become one."

Thomas arrived an hour later.

He brought news.

Bad news.

"The police found something."

I frowned.

"What?"

"Vanessa's old records."

My expression changed.

Vanessa.

Even after prison, even after everything she had done, her name still had the ability to bring chaos.

"What about them?"

"They found payments."

"From who?"

Thomas hesitated.

I already knew.

"Say it."

"Evelyn Cross."

The room went silent.

Adrian looked at me.

"She was working with Vanessa?"

I shook my head slowly.

"No."

"What then?"

I looked at the evidence.

And suddenly, the entire picture changed.

"Vanessa wasn't working with Evelyn."

I whispered.

"Vanessa was working for her."

Everything started making sense.

The betrayal.

The financial crimes.

Daniel's downfall.

The attacks.

The inheritance.

It wasn't random.

It was a chain.

A carefully planned chain that started decades ago.

Evelyn had never wanted Daniel's empire.

She had wanted control over the person who controlled it.

Me.

And now...

She wanted Lily.

That afternoon, Lily asked me a question that broke my heart.

"Grandma?"

I looked up from the garden.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Why does everyone keep looking at me like I'm important?"

My breath caught.

Children always noticed the things adults tried hardest to hide.

"What makes you think that?"

She shrugged.

"Adrian does."

A pause.

"Thomas does."

Another pause.

"And you do."

I smiled sadly.

"You are important."

"Because I'm your granddaughter?"

"Yes."

She looked down.

"No."

My heart tightened.

"What?"

She looked at me with those innocent eyes.

"Because people are afraid of something about me."

I didn't answer.

Because she was right.

And I hated that she was right.

I sat beside her.

"Lily, listen to me."

She looked at me.

"You are not important because of money."

"Okay."

"You are not important because of a name."

She nodded.

"You are important because you are you."

A small smile appeared.

"Promise?"

I took her hand.

"Promise."

But inside, I made another promise.

A different one.

Whoever tried to use her...

Would regret it.

That night, Evelyn contacted me again.

This time, she wanted a meeting.

No threats.

No games.

Just an address.

An abandoned mountain chapel three miles from the estate.

Thomas immediately objected.

"It's a trap."

"Of course it is."

"Then don't go."

I looked at him.

"Thomas."

He stopped.

"You know me better than that."

He sighed.

"Yes."

Adrian stepped forward.

"I'm coming."

"No."

"You can't stop me."

"I can."

He smiled slightly.

"That's exactly what my father would have said."

That annoyed me.

But also...

It reminded me of something.

I had spent my life pushing people away to protect them.

Maybe that was another mistake.

Maybe protection didn't always mean distance.

Sometimes it meant letting people stand beside you.

The chapel had been abandoned for years.

Broken windows.

Cracked stone.

A place forgotten by everyone.

Except Evelyn.

She stood near the altar.

Older.

Gray hair.

A walking stick.

But her eyes were unchanged.

Sharp.

Calculating.

The eyes of the woman who once taught me how to survive.

"You look older."

I almost smiled.

"So do you."

She laughed.

"There she is."

I stopped several feet away.

"Why Lily?"

Her expression changed.

"Because you love her."

"That's not an answer."

"It is the only answer that matters."

I stared at her.

"You destroyed my family."

"No."

She shook her head.

"Daniel destroyed your family."

"You created Daniel."

"Yes."

The admission surprised me.

Evelyn looked around the chapel.

"I created many monsters."

Her voice softened.

"You were supposed to be the greatest one."

I felt anger rise.

"But I wasn't."

"No."

She smiled sadly.

"You were the only one who learned something I never could."

"What?"

"That power without love is just another form of weakness."

For a moment, I saw something.

Regret.

Real regret.

But I didn't trust it.

Not yet.

"Why did you come back?"

Evelyn looked at me.

"Because the people who truly started this war are coming."

My eyes narrowed.

"You expect me to believe you?"

"No."

She looked toward Adrian.

"That's why I brought proof."

She handed me a file.

Inside was one document.

One name.

One signature.

And when I saw it...

Everything stopped.

Because the person behind everything wasn't Evelyn.

It wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It was someone I never suspected.

Someone who had been close to me for years.

Someone I had protected.

Someone I had trusted.

My hands trembled.

"No..."

Evelyn watched me.

"I told you."

Her voice was quiet.

"The enemy was always hiding in your family tree."

I returned to the estate before midnight.

No one spoke.

Because everyone saw my face.

They knew something had changed.

Adrian followed me into the office.

"What did you find?"

I placed the document on the table.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

"Impossible."

I nodded.

"That's what I said."

Thomas looked over.

"Who?"

I looked at them.

And finally said the name.

"The person who betrayed us all."

A pause.

"The person who caused Daniel's downfall."

A pause.

"The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning."

I looked toward Lily's room.

"The person who has been pretending to protect this family."

The fire cracked.

No one moved.

Then Adrian whispered:

"Who is it?"

I closed my eyes.

Because saying the name made it real.

"It is..."

I opened my eyes.

"...my own daughter."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

My daughter.

The child I had lost.

The child whose memory I protected.

The child whose death started everything.

But the evidence said something impossible.

She wasn't dead.

She had survived.

And she had been watching.

Waiting.

Planning.

The war I thought I was fighting...

Had been inside my family all along.

Outside, the wind howled through the mountains.

Inside, Lily slept peacefully.

Unaware that the entire truth of her family was about to collapse.

And I realized something terrifying.

I had spent my entire life defeating enemies who wanted my power.

But now I faced the one enemy I was never prepared to fight.

The person who shared my blood.

The person whose childhood I failed to protect.

The person whose pain I never understood.

My daughter.

The final ghost from my past.

And if I wanted to save Lily...

I would have to face the one battle I had avoided my entire life.

May you like

Facing myself.
