Chapter 7 - The Unmasking

The room erupted into quiet, intense whispers as I stepped up to the second podium on the right side of the stage.
I wore no flashy jewelry, used no dramatic gestures. I walked with a calm, unshakeable grace, resting my right hand lightly on the podium, my black splint visible to everyone in the audience.
"Good morning, members of the Apex board," I said, my voice clear, steady, and amplified through the ballroom speakers. "My name is Maya Lin. I am the Founder and CEO of Lin Strategic Holdings."
Nolan took three frantic steps toward me, but two event security guards immediately stepped onto the stage, blocking his path.
"Maya, stop this!" Nolan hissed under his breath, his eyes wild with terror. "You're destroying everything!"
I did not look at him. I kept my eyes fixed on the Apex Tech executive board.
"The presentation deck currently locked on that screen," I continued calmly, "was authored by me over a eighteen-month period during my employment at Westbridge Strategy. When I departed the firm four weeks ago due to severe ethical breaches and workplace misconduct by Mr. Pierce and Ms. Ward, I left behind a forensic trap on Westbridge’s internal servers to protect my copyrighted frameworks."
Camille looked as though she was going to faint. She leaned heavily against the podium, clutching her stomach.
"Under United States Copyright Law and the Washington Trade Secrets Act," I stated, as David Vance walked onto the stage carrying a stack of formal legal documents, "any attempt to commercialize these specific predictive models without my express written consent constitutes willful corporate espionage and criminal trade secret theft."
David Vance handed a cease-and-desist packet directly to the Apex Tech CMO, then handed a second packet to Nolan.
"Mr. Pierce," David Vance announced loudly enough for the front three rows to hear, "you and Westbridge Strategy have been formally served with a twenty-million-dollar federal lawsuit for trade secret conversion, fraud, and corporate defamation."
The Apex Tech CMO looked at the legal documents, then looked up at Nolan and Camille with pure disgust.
"Security," the CMO ordered firmly. "Please escort Mr. Pierce and Ms. Ward out of this ballroom. Apex Tech does not conduct business with thieves."
The audience gasped as four uniformed hotel security officers stepped onto the main stage.
Camille began to cry hysterically, dropping her presentation clicker onto the hardwood floor, covering her face with her hands as her blue designer suit was paraded past three hundred filming smartphones.
Nolan stood frozen as an officer grabbed his arm.
He looked across the podium at me.
For four years, he had believed he was the master of my destiny. He had believed that without his title, his charm, his umbrella, I was nothing more than a quiet girl who would always fall behind him in the rain.
Now, standing under the bright spotlight of the main stage, surrounded by the elite of our industry, he saw the truth.
"Maya..." he choked out, his eyes begging for mercy. "Maya, please... look at me..."
I did not speak. I did not glare at him with rage.
May you like
I simply looked at him with the cold, absolute indifference of a woman who had completely outgrown his existence.
The security officers pulled him off the stage, his polished leather shoes squeaking pathetically against the floor as the heavy oak doors closed behind him.
