Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT OF TWO SONSThe outer cabinets erupted first.

Wood, metal and paper blasted across the registry chamber. The stained-glass dome shattered overhead, raining colored fragments onto the circular table.
Eliza threw herself over Noah.
Damian covered Oliver.
The floor heaved but did not collapse.
Arthur had told the truth about the center platform.
Marcus disappeared behind smoke and falling debris.
Gunfire began from three directions.
Sofia and Jonah breached through the parking entrance as Rachel pulled Judge Cole beneath the heavy desk.
One of Marcus’s men fired toward the boys.
Arthur turned his wheelchair into the line of fire.
The bullet struck his shoulder and threw him backward.
Damian shot the attacker.
Eliza held Noah against the floor until the first wave of debris stopped falling.
“Stay down!”
“Oliver!”
“He’s with Damian.”
Smoke filled the chamber.
Emergency sprinklers activated, soaking burning documents and turning dust into gray mud.
Eliza lifted her head.
Oliver and Damian were behind the opposite side of the table.
Both alive.
The twins saw each other through the smoke.
Then a figure seized Noah from behind.
Marcus.
He dragged the boy upright and pressed a gun against his ribs.
Eliza rose slowly.
“No.”
Marcus’s face was cut from the glass. Blood ran into one eye.
“Your family has cost me enough.”
Damian aimed at him.
“Release him.”
“Place the weapon down.”
Noah stood perfectly still.
His face became empty in the way of a child practiced at hiding fear.
Eliza hated Marcus most for teaching him that.
Damian lowered his gun to the floor.
“Kick it away.”
He obeyed.
Marcus looked at Oliver.
“You too.”
Oliver held no weapon, but he stood beside Arthur’s fallen trigger.
The boy picked it up.
Marcus laughed.
“The charges have already fired.”
Oliver pressed a button.
A second explosion shook the far corridor.
Marcus flinched.
Noah drove his heel down on Marcus’s foot.
The gun moved away from his body.
Damian lunged.
Marcus fired.
The bullet struck Damian high in the chest.
Eliza screamed.
Damian fell against the table.
Noah broke free.
Eliza pulled him behind the desk as Sofia fired toward Marcus.
He escaped through the smoke, dragging Judge Cole with him as a shield.
“Damian!”
Eliza crawled across broken glass.
Blood spread beneath his shoulder.
Not the center of his chest.
The bullet had entered below the collarbone.
He was conscious.
“Oliver,” he gasped.
The boy knelt beside him.
“I’m here.”
Damian caught his hand.
“Noah?”
“Mom has him.”
The word Mom came naturally from Oliver.
Noah heard it from behind the desk.
His expression tightened, but he did not look away.
Dr. Morris rushed into the chamber with a medical team.
She cut open Damian’s shirt.
“Exit wound. It missed the heart, but he’s losing blood.”
“I can walk.”
“No.”
“I need Marcus.”
“You need surgery.”
Damian tried to rise.
Eliza pressed him down.
“Let Sofia handle Marcus.”
“He has the judge and the original records.”
“Arthur said Eleanor had them.”
Everyone turned.
Eleanor lay near the cabinet.
She moved.
Arthur dragged himself toward her.
The bullet had struck her side, not her head. Blood covered her dress, but she was breathing.
Morris’s assistant went to her.
Arthur reached for his wife’s hand.
“I’m sorry.”
Eleanor opened her eyes.
“I told you.”
“I know.”
“No more apologies without truth.”
Arthur nodded, tears mixing with sprinkler water.
“Where are the records?” Eliza asked.
Eleanor looked at the broken stained glass.
“Not here.”
“Marcus said you helped him.”
“I gave him copies.”
“Why?”
“To make him believe he had won.”
Despite her wound, something fierce entered Eleanor’s face.
“The originals were delivered to federal prosecutors yesterday.”
Marcus had no final leverage.
He did not know it yet.
A radio crackled.
Sofia’s voice came through.
“Marcus is heading to the roof. He has Judge Cole and a helicopter waiting.”
Damian tried to rise again.
Morris pushed him down.
Eliza took his face between her hands.
“Stay alive.”
“Mara—”
“My name is Eliza.”
His eyes closed briefly.
He was losing focus.
“Eliza.”
“I will get Marcus.”
“No.”
“You told Oliver that fatherhood is what you do every day.”
“Yes.”
“Then do it. Stay with our sons.”
Our sons.
Noah heard her.
So did Damian.
Eliza stood.
Rachel caught her arm.
“You’re not going alone.”
They followed Sofia’s path toward the roof.
The courthouse stairwell had partially collapsed. Smoke moved between the levels. Alarms echoed throughout the building.
At the top landing, they found one of Marcus’s men unconscious and another dead.
The roof door stood open.
Wind and rain tore across the building.
A helicopter waited near the far edge.
Its blades had begun turning.
Marcus held Judge Cole in front of him while moving toward the aircraft. A pilot waited inside.
Sofia crouched behind an air-conditioning unit with a clear shot blocked by the judge.
“Marcus!” Eliza shouted.
He turned.
His smile returned.
“You continue to offer yourself as if that means anything.”
“The records are gone.”
“I have them.”
“You have copies Eleanor gave you.”
His expression changed.
“The originals reached federal prosecutors yesterday.”
Judge Cole looked at him.
“You told me they were destroyed.”
Marcus tightened his arm around her neck.
Eliza moved closer.
“You have no trust. No guardianship. No doctors willing to defend the records. Soren is dead. Arthur is alive. Rachel is alive. Eleanor is alive.”
“You think witnesses survive court?”
“Your financial network is already frozen.”
Rachel stepped beside Eliza.
“I sent every account number six weeks ago.”
Marcus’s gaze moved to her.
“You could have left at any time.”
“No. I could have run. That is not the same as being free.”
The helicopter blades accelerated.
Marcus pulled the judge toward the open door.
Eliza saw movement inside the aircraft.
The pilot’s hands were no longer on the controls.
Jonah rose from behind the opposite seat and pressed a gun against the pilot’s neck.
Marcus stopped.
Sofia stepped from cover.
“No exit.”
For the first time, fear entered Marcus Vale’s face.
He released Judge Cole and aimed at Eliza.
Rachel shoved her sister aside.
The shot struck Rachel.
She fell.
Eliza caught her before her head hit the roof.
Sofia fired.
The bullet struck Marcus’s hand, sending his weapon across the wet concrete.
He ran toward the roof edge.
Below, police vehicles surrounded the courthouse.
Damian’s people and federal agents filled the streets.
Marcus looked down.
Then back at Eliza.
“You still think you won?”
Eliza held pressure against Rachel’s shoulder.
“My sons are together.”
“They will never recover from what you told them.”
“No.”
She looked toward the stairwell.
“They will recover from what you did to them.”
Marcus stepped onto the edge.
Sofia approached slowly.
“Move down.”
He laughed.
“You cannot put me in a cage.”
“Then step away from the ledge.”
Marcus looked at the city he had controlled through judges, doctors and frightened men.
For years, he had hidden behind screens and speakers.
Now there was nowhere left to hide.
He turned as if to jump.
A hand caught the back of his coat.
Arthur.
He had dragged himself onto the roof despite two gunshot wounds.
Marcus twisted.
“You.”
Arthur pulled him backward.
Both men fell onto the concrete.
Sofia and Jonah secured Marcus’s arms.
Arthur lay beside him, breathing hard.
Marcus looked at the man he had controlled for eight years.
“You think this redeems you?”
“No,” Arthur said. “That is why I am going to testify.”
Federal agents rushed onto the roof.
Marcus was handcuffed.
Judge Cole was arrested beside him.
Paramedics took Rachel and Arthur downstairs.
Eliza followed.
In the registry chamber, Damian was already on a stretcher. Oliver held one of his hands.
Noah stood several feet away.
He looked uncertain whether he was permitted to approach.
Eliza placed one hand between his shoulders.
“You can come with us.”
“Where?”
“The hospital.”
“Will he die?”
“No.”
Again, it was a promise she could not guarantee.
This time, she added the truth.
“The doctors will do everything they can. And we will stay with him.”
Noah looked at Oliver.
Oliver held out Damian’s watch.
“This is Dad’s.”
Noah touched it.
“He gave it to me because he promised to come back.”
“Did he?”
“Not yet.”
Oliver opened Noah’s hand and placed the watch inside it.
“You hold it now.”
“Why?”
“Because he has to come back for both of us.”
The boys walked beside the stretcher together.
At the hospital, Damian went directly into surgery.
Rachel was treated for a shoulder wound.
Arthur underwent a second operation.
Eleanor survived.
Eliza sat in the private waiting room between her sons.
Oliver leaned against her left side.
Noah sat rigidly on her right, still holding Damian’s watch.
After an hour, his head lowered onto her shoulder.
Eliza did not move.
Three hours later, the surgeon entered.
“Damian is stable.”
Oliver began crying.
Eliza did too.
Noah remained silent.
Then he handed the watch to Eliza.
“He came back.”
“Yes.”
The boy looked toward the operating doors.
“Can I call him Dad when he wakes up?”
Eliza touched his hair.
“You can call him anything you choose.”
May you like
Noah considered that.
“I think I want to try.”
