CHAPTER 4 – The Airport Escape and the Frozen Empire

The moment Adrian Castillo stepped out of his private office, the building no longer felt like his.

It was a strange sensation—subtle at first, like walking into a room where the furniture had been shifted just a few inches. Everything still looked the same, yet nothing aligned the way memory insisted it should.

His phone vibrated nonstop in his hand.

Messages from bankers.

Lawyers.

Business partners.

Then silence.

Then panic again.

Vanessa hurried behind him, heels striking the marble floor too fast, too sharp.

“Adrian, you need to see this,” she said, holding her tablet up. “They’ve issued a global freeze on all Castillo Holdings accounts tied to marital co-ownership structures.”

Margaret’s voice followed, tense and rising.

“She can’t do this. She’s not even—she’s just one person.”

Adrian didn’t respond.

Because that was the problem.

She was just one person.

And yet everything was collapsing as if she were an institution.

AIRPORT – BARCELONA ARRIVAL GATE

Elena stepped off the plane without rushing.

Noah walked slightly ahead, holding his dinosaur backpack like it was the only constant in the world. Lily held her hand tightly, still half-asleep.

The Barcelona air felt different—lighter, almost indifferent to what she had just left behind.

A man in a dark suit waited near the exit.

He nodded once.

“Mrs. Salazar.”

Elena didn’t correct him.

She rarely corrected people anymore.

“Car is ready,” he added.

As they moved through the terminal, her phone buzzed again.

Unknown caller.

Then again.

And again.

She ignored them all.

But she knew.

He was coming.

MADRID – CASTILLO FAMILY OFFICE

The first real crack appeared at 9:14 AM.

The second at 9:16.

By 9:30, it was no longer a crack.

It was collapse.

Adrian stood in front of a live financial dashboard, watching his empire flicker like a dying signal.

Assets in Geneva: frozen.
Real estate holdings in Dubai: flagged.
Private equity stakes: suspended pending “marital asset dispute review.”

Vanessa paced behind him.

“This is targeted,” she said. “This isn’t a standard freeze. Someone coordinated this across multiple jurisdictions.”

Margaret’s voice turned sharper.

“Then fight it. Hire someone. Call the board.”

Adrian finally turned.

His eyes were not angry now.

They were focused.

Too focused.

“I don’t need to call the board,” he said quietly.

Vanessa frowned. “Then what do you need?”

A pause.

Then Adrian said one word:

“Her.”

THE ESCAPE SHE ALREADY BUILT

Back in Barcelona, Elena stood in a quiet apartment overlooking the city.

It was not large.

Not extravagant.

But it was safe.

And more importantly—

It was untraceable.

Attorney Dawson’s voice came through a secure line on her laptop.

“They’ve sent inquiries to every jurisdiction they can think of. Adrian is escalating fast.”

Elena placed a glass of water on the table.

“Let him escalate,” she said calmly.

A pause on the line.

“You expected this level of reaction?”

Elena looked toward the window where Noah and Lily were eating breakfast at the table.

“I expected worse,” she said.

Because Adrian was not the dangerous one.

Men like him rarely were.

The dangerous ones were the systems that protected them.

And Elena had already studied every layer of that system.

AIRPORT – MADRID PRIVATE TERMINAL

Adrian arrived at the terminal within hours.

No commercial ticket.

No announcement.

Just a private jet fueled and waiting.

Vanessa followed behind, still trying to process.

“You’re really going after her?”

Adrian fastened his cufflinks slowly.

“She didn’t leave,” he said.

Margaret frowned. “What do you mean?”

“She escaped.”

A pause.

Then he added:

“And people only escape when they’re hiding something.”

The jet door closed behind him.

Engines roared.

And for the first time since the divorce—

Adrian moved with purpose.

Not celebration.

Not arrogance.

But pursuit.

BARCELONA – SAFEHOUSE SYSTEM ACTIVATION

Elena opened her laptop again.

A red notification blinked:

“UNAUTHORIZED TRACE ATTEMPT DETECTED – SOURCE: CASTILLO FINANCIAL NETWORK”

She sighed softly.

Too fast.

He was learning faster than expected.

Still…

Not fast enough.

She typed a single command.

The screen shifted.

Layers of encrypted directories unfolded like a map of invisible walls.

Each one labeled:

  • Layer 1: Financial Isolation

  • Layer 2: Jurisdiction Lock

  • Layer 3: Reputation Containment

  • Layer 4: Asset Dissolution Confirmation

And at the very bottom:

  • Layer 5: Final Execution Clause (LOCKED)

Dawson’s message popped up.

“If he reaches Layer 3, he’ll start contacting media. Are you prepared?”

Elena didn’t hesitate.

“He won’t reach Layer 3.”

MID-FLIGHT – ADRIAN’S JET

The turbulence outside mirrored the tension inside.

Vanessa stood near the cabin window.

“This is insane,” she muttered. “We’re chasing a woman across countries because she froze accounts?”

Margaret, seated behind them, added coldly:

“She humiliated this family.”

Adrian didn’t look up from his tablet.

“I don’t care about humiliation,” he said.

Silence.

Then, quieter:

“I care about how she did it.”

Because what haunted him wasn’t the loss.

It was precision.

No chaos.

No noise.

Only structure.

Only intention.

Only someone who had prepared for him long before he realized there was a battle at all.

BARCELONA – THE FIRST BREACH

Elena’s screen flashed red again.

“BREACH ATTEMPT: LOCAL NODE ACCESS – BLOCKED”

She narrowed her eyes slightly.

Impressive.

He had hired outside specialists.

Not just corporate lawyers.

Not just bankers.

But recovery operatives.

People who didn’t stop at legality.

Still—

She tapped one key.

The system responded instantly.

The breach collapsed.

Like a door closing in someone’s face.

She leaned back slightly.

“Noah,” she called softly.

He looked up from his drawing.

“Yes, Mommy?”

“After breakfast, we might go somewhere else for a while.”

“Is Daddy coming?” Lily asked innocently.

Elena paused.

Then answered honestly.

“Yes.”

But not for the reason they thought.

MADRID – VANESSA’S REALIZATION

Hours later, Vanessa stood in the Castillo estate hallway, staring at something she hadn’t noticed before.

A framed document.

Old.

Almost invisible.

It was a corporate signature page.

But one name stood out in fine print:

Consultant: E. Marquez Salazar

Her breath slowed.

“That name…” she whispered.

Margaret approached. “What about it?”

Vanessa turned slowly.

“I’ve seen it before.”

Adrian arrived behind them just in time to hear her next words.

“In international asset protection cases… Geneva, Zurich, Luxembourg…”

A pause.

Then:

“It’s not a wife’s name.”

Her eyes lifted toward Adrian.

“It’s a handler’s name.”

The silence that followed was heavier than anything money could buy.

THE FIRST FACE-TO-FACE APPROACH

That night, Elena received the notification.

“PRIVATE AIRCRAFT: CASTILLO FLIGHT LANDING REQUEST – BARCELONA APPROACH”

She stared at it for a long moment.

Then closed the laptop.

“Too early,” she murmured.

Dawson’s voice came through the secure line:

“Do you want me to block entry authorization?”

Elena looked out the window.

Barcelona lights stretched endlessly below.

“No,” she said finally.

A pause.

“Let him land.”

Because there was a difference between running from someone…

And letting them walk into a room they didn’t understand yet.

She turned off the screen.

And added quietly:

“I want him to see what he built before it disappears completely.”

END OF CHAPTER 4

Adrian Castillo was no longer chasing a wife.

He was walking toward something far more dangerous.

A truth he had never prepared for.

And Elena—

May you like

was no longer escaping.

She was positioning.
