Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Castillo

Three weeks later, the summer heat in Manhattan was suffocating, matching the white-hot crisis consuming the headquarters of Castillo Logistics on Wall Street.
Inside the glass-walled executive boardroom on the fortieth floor, Adrian Castillo sat at the head of a massive mahogany table. His pristine designer suits were gone, replaced by a crumpled shirt with rolled-up sleeves. Dark, dark circles framed his bloodshot eyes, and his hair was unwashed and unkempt.
Across the table sat six stern men and women—the senior board members and primary venture capital investors of Castillo Logistics.
Beside Adrian sat his sister Vanessa, her face red and blotchy, and his mother Margaret, who was clutching a handkerchief, dabbing continuously at her eyes.
"Adrian," spoke Richard Vance (no relation to Elena), the lead board investor, leaning his heavy forearms on the table. "We have given you three weeks to resolve your personal financial legalities. Three weeks. In that time, three of our largest shipping line clients have canceled their long-term freight contracts. The banks have placed our primary operating line of credit into default. Our stock value has dropped by sixty-two percent."
"It's an temporary issue, Richard!" Adrian shouted, his voice cracking with desperation as he slammed his palm on the table. "My ex-wife... Elena... she filed fraudulent emergency orders! She lied to the courts! She stole my money and fled to Spain with my children!"
"She didn't steal your money, Adrian," Richard snapped coldly, opening a thick leather audit report. "According to the forensic accounting report delivered to this board yesterday by Dawson Legal, you illegally siphoned twelve million dollars out of corporate capital reserves and family trust accounts to fund luxury real estate purchases for a mistress who was fooling you!"
Vanessa jumped to her feet. "That woman Chloe manipulated my brother! She lied to our family! Adrian is the victim here!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Richard barked, flashing a look of pure disdain. "Your brother is not a child! He is supposed to be the CEO of a major logistics firm! Instead, he operated with reckless arrogance, ignored basic legal counsel, signed away his custody rights without reading his own divorce decree, and exposed this entire corporation to massive financial liability!"
Margaret leaned forward, her voice trembling. "Gentlemen... please. The Castillo family built this company. My late husband—"
"Your late husband was a honorable businessman, Mrs. Castillo," another board member interrupted sharply. "Your son, however, is a liability. As of nine o'clock this morning, the board has officially voted to invoke Clause 14 of the corporate charter."
Adrian froze, his eyes widening in horror. "Clause 14? You... you can't strip my executive voting rights!"
"We just did," Richard stated flatly. "You are officially removed as Chief Executive Officer of Castillo Logistics. Effective immediately."
"You can't do this to me!" Adrian screamed, standing up so fast his leather chair fell backward, crashing against the glass wall. "This is my company! My name is on the building!"
"Not anymore," Richard said calmly, signaling two heavy security guards standing by the boardroom doors. "The court has appointed an independent receiver to oversee the liquidation of your personal equity to pay back the twelve million dollars owed to your children's trust fund. Furthermore, a formal criminal referral for corporate embezzlement has been submitted to the Southern District Attorney’s Office."
"Criminal referral?!" Margaret gasped, clutching her chest before collapsing into her chair in a fit of frantic gasps. "My son... in prison?! No! You can't!"
"Security, please escort Mr. Castillo and his family out of the building," Richard commanded without looking back. "They are no longer permitted on corporate premises."
The security guards moved forward, grabbing Adrian by the arms.
"Get your hands off me!" Adrian roared, flailing wildly as he was dragged out of his own boardroom, past dozens of lower-level employees who were staring, whispering, and taking videos on their phones. "I'm Adrian Castillo! Do you hear me?! I'm Adrian Castillo!"
Ten minutes later, the heavy glass revolving doors of the Wall Street skyscraper pushed Adrian, Vanessa, and Margaret out onto the crowded sidewalk.
The afternoon sun beat down relentlessly. Passersby bumped past them without a second glance.
For the first time in his life, Adrian Castillo had no corner office, no credit cards, no corporate driver, and no authority. He was completely bankrupt, publicly disgraced, and facing federal criminal prosecution.
Vanessa collapsed against the cold granite wall of the building, sobbing hysterically. "What are we going to do, Adrian?! They locked us out of the apartment! The landlord put our luggage on the street! The banks took my car back!"
Margaret grabbed Adrian’s arm, her fingers digging into his sleeve like talons. "Call her, Adrian... call Elena! She’s your wife! She’s a gentle girl... she always listened to you! Beg her! Tell her you're sorry! Tell her to send us money from Spain!"
Adrian stood on the hot, dirty pavement, staring at his phone. His reflection in the dark screen showed a broken, hollow man—a ghost of the proud, arrogant CEO who had sat in Attorney Bennett’s office three weeks ago calling his own children "dead weight."
He tapped out a frantic, desperate text message with shaking hands, his tears falling onto the glass screen:
Elena... please. I'm begging you. I made a mistake. I was crazy. Chloe tricked me. My mother and sister are homeless. I have nothing left. Please... send me money. Let me see Noah and Lily. I'm their father... please...

A small red exclamation mark flashed on his screen instantly.
