Chapter 5 - THE RECKONING

At 8:45 AM on Friday morning, a sleek fleet of dark vehicles pulled up outside the luxury residential tower in Midtown Manhattan.
A crowd of reporters, news crews, and curious bystanders had already gathered behind the police barricades. Word had leaked that the federal authorities were making their move.
A black suburban pulled to the curb, and the rear door opened.
I stepped out, dressed in an immaculate emerald-green tailored suit, dark sunglasses, and high heels. Alongside me were Arthur Graves and two private security guards.
The crowd erupted in camera flashes as I walked calmly toward the building's private glass entrance.
Inside the lobby, six FBI agents clad in dark blue jackets with yellow lettering were conferring with the building's head of security.
"Ms. Sterling," the lead special agent said, stepping forward and offering a brief nod of respect. "We are proceeding to Penthouse B."
"Lead the way, Agent Miller," I said.
We rode the private elevator up to the 45th floor. The doors opened directly into the hallway of the penthouse.
Agent Miller stepped up to the massive double doors, knocked firmly three times, and announced in a booming voice:
"Federal agents! We have a warrant for the arrest of Caleb Vance! Open the door immediately!"
Inside, frantic shuffling and panicked whispering could be heard.
A moment later, the door creaked open.
Caleb stood in the doorway, looking entirely unraveled. His eyes were sunken, his face unshaven, and his clothes disheveled. Behind him, Donna and Brenda were cowering near the bare kitchen island.
"W-What is this?" Caleb stammered, looking at the badges held up by the agents.
"Caleb Vance, you are under arrest for federal bank fraud, wire fraud, and grand larceny," Agent Miller announced, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
"No! Wait! There's been a mistake!" Caleb yelled, backing away. "I’m a corporate executive! This is a civil dispute with my wife!"
"It became a federal matter when you routed four million dollars through international financial institutions using stolen digital credentials," Agent Miller said coldly.
Two agents stepped forward, grabbed Caleb’s arms, turned him around, and snapped the cold steel cuffs onto his wrists.
Caleb gasped, struggling against their grip, and that was when his eyes shifted toward the doorway.
He saw me.
I was standing right beside my attorney, looking at him with cool, silent detachment.
"Cordelia!" Caleb cried out, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. "Cordelia, please! Tell them to stop! You know I didn't mean to hurt you! I did it for us! I did it for our future!"
Donna rushed forward, tears streaming down her face, screaming at me. "You heartless witch! How can you do this to your husband?! He is the father of your child! Have you no mercy?!"
I took one step into the foyer, looking past Caleb toward his sobbing mother.
"Mercy, Donna?" I said, my voice echoing clearly off the empty walls. "Five days ago, I was bleeding from an abdominal incision, holding a five-day-old infant in the freezing wind. You walked past me, got into my car, and drank coffee while your son shoved me toward a public bus."
Donna froze, her mouth open, but no words came out.
"You sat at Crown & Bull eating steak bought with stolen money while my son and I traveled in public transit," I continued, turning my gaze back to Caleb. "You didn't show mercy to your wife or your son. Why on earth did you think I would show any to you?"
Caleb dropped to his knees right there on the hardwood floor, weeping openly, the iron cuffs rattling behind his back.
"Cordelia... please... I’m sorry," he sobbed, looking up at me with absolute despair. "Please don't do this... I’ll give everything back... I’ll do whatever you want..."
I reached into my blazer pocket, pulled out the crumpled twenty-dollar bill he had pressed into my hand at the hospital, and slowly let it drop.
It drifted through the air and landed on the floor right beside his knees.
"Keep the change, Caleb," I whispered.
Agent Miller hauled him to his feet. "Let’s go, Vance."
The agents dragged the weeping, broken man out of the apartment, down the hallway, and into the elevator.
Brenda sat on the floor, crying uncontrollably, while Donna collapsed onto a folding chair, burying her face in her hands.
I didn't say another word to them. I turned around, adjusted my blazer, and walked back out into the bright morning light of Manhattan.
Outside, as the federal agents loaded Caleb into the back of an unmarked police van under the blinding flashes of a hundred news cameras, I climbed into the rear seat of my waiting Rolls-Royce.
I pulled out my phone and called my father.

"It’s done, Dad," I said.
"Good," Harrison replied gently. "Come back to Greenwich, Cordelia. Leo is awake, and your new life is waiting."
