Chapter 8 - The Clearing Storm

By 4:00 a.m., the rain had stopped, leaving behind a crisp, clean morning air over the Chicago skyline.
The docks around Terminal 42 were illuminated by the flashing red and blue lights of fifty police cruisers and federal vehicles. Special Agent Vance stood on the pier, wrapped in a heavy trench coat, holding a cup of steaming coffee as federal agents cleared the cargo ship.
I walked down the gangway, taking off my tactical gloves.
Vance walked up to meet me, looking at the body bags being loaded into county coroners' vans.
"Vincenzo?" she asked quietly.
"He slipped off the deck during the storm," I replied, my voice completely emotionless. "The current took him."
Vance let out a long, heavy sigh, shaking her head. "You're a terrifying man, Marcus. You turned a multi-national mercenary team into a footnote in four hours."
"They threatened my children, Vance," I said, looking her straight in the eye. "There is no law, no government, and no force on this earth that will stop me from protecting them."
Vance took a sip of her coffee, looking out over the calm waters of the lake as the first golden rays of dawn began to break through the Eastern horizon.
"The federal task force processed the seizure of the MV Corazon," Vance said slowly, choosing her words with extreme legal precision. "We found financial ledgers on board linking the Moretti Council in Milan to international human trafficking and extortion. The Italian government executed arrest warrants on the remaining family leaders in Rome two hours ago."
I looked at her, understanding what she was telling me. "The syndicate is finished."
"Completely," Vance confirmed. "There is no Moretti family left to fight a war. It's over, Marcus. For good."
She pulled a thick manila envelope from her coat and handed it to me.
"What's this?" I asked.
"Official state birth certificates and adoption finalization papers for Emma Blackwell," Vance said, a rare, soft smile touching her lips. "I signed off as the federal guardian sponsor. She is legally your daughter, Marcus. Her name is Emma Grace Blackwell."
I took the envelope, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders that I had carried for seven long, brutal years.

"Thank you, Agent Vance," I said sincerely.
"Don't make me regret this, Blackwell," she said, turning back toward her command vehicle. "Go home to your daughters."
