Chapter 5 - The Financial Collapse

The fallout from the IRS investigation was swift and devastating.

Within forty-eight hours of receiving the ledgers I had preserved, federal agents seized twenty-two properties belonging to the Patel business network across Texas and Oklahoma. Bank accounts totaling over twelve million dollars were frozen under federal asset forfeiture laws.

Jayesh Patel was arrested at Houston Intercontinental Airport while attempting to board a flight to Dubai, charged with federal tax fraud, money laundering, and racketeering.

Deprived of Jayesh’s financial backing, Navin and Devki’s legal defense fell apart completely. Vance Sterling, realizing there was no money left to pay his exorbitant legal fees, filed an emergency motion to withdraw as their attorney.

When Navin and Devki appeared in court for their pre-trial conference three weeks later, they were no longer represented by elite defense counsel. Sitting beside them was a overworked public defender who had received the case file twenty-four hours earlier.

I sat in the gallery, watching as the full reality of their situation crushed them.

Devki was weeping openly now, her hair greasy and unwashed, her orange jumpsuit hanging loosely off her shrinking frame. Navin looked like a ghost, his hands shaking uncontrollably as he stared at the floor.

“Your Honor,” the public defender stated, standing up nervously before Judge Alpert. “My clients wish to inquire if the State is willing to offer a plea agreement.”

Judge Alpert turned her gaze toward Sarah Jenkins at the prosecution table.

Sarah stood up, her posture regal and uncompromising. “The State’s position has not changed, Your Honor. Given the extreme violence, the loss of human life, and the overwhelming digital and physical evidence, we will not offer a plea deal. We are proceeding to trial, and we are seeking the maximum sentence under the law.”

Devki let out a strangled sob, burying her face in her hands.

Navin turned his head toward the gallery, his eyes searching frantically until they locked onto mine.

“Maya!” he cried out, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. “Maya, please! Talk to them! I’m sorry! I was wrong! My mother made me do it! She forced me!”

Devki snapped her head up, staring at her son in absolute disbelief. “Navin! What are you saying? I did everything for you!”

“She did it!” Navin screamed, pointing his chained hands at his mother. “She’s the one who wanted the boy! She told me to beat her! She held the rope!”

“You cowardly dog!” Devki shrieked, lunging across the defense table to scratch at Navin’s face with her fingernails. “I raised you! You ungrateful bastard!”

The courtroom erupted into total chaos. Three bailiffs rushed forward, pulling them apart as they hit the floor, screaming curses at each other, their family bond completely disintegrating under the weight of their own cowardice.

Judge Alpert slammed her gavel repeatedly. “Clear the court! Bailiffs, secure the defendants!”

I watched as they were dragged out through separate doors, screaming and crying, blaming each other for the hell they had created together. I took a deep, clean breath of air, feeling the final chains of my past snap away forever.
