Chapter 8 - The Clear Horizon

One year later.
The sun was setting over the Florida Keys, painting the sky in long, dramatic strokes of violet, rose, and burnished gold.
At the end of a long wooden pier extending into the calm, turquoise waters of Islamorada, Skylar stood leaning against the wooden railing.
She wore a simple white linen dress that fluttered in the warm evening breeze. Her skin was golden from the sun, her hair highlights gleaming under the last rays of daylight.
Beside her stood Marcus Vance—not Victoria’s relative, but a gentle, soft-spoken marine architect she had met eight months ago during a coastal preservation charity event in Coconut Grove.
Marcus wasn't loud. He didn't wear tailored suits to prove his worth, and he didn't check his phone during dinner. He was a man who built wooden boats with his own hands, who listened more than he spoke, and who looked at Skylar not like an asset to manage, but like a universe to discover.
"What are you thinking about?" Marcus asked, his voice low and warm against the sound of the small waves lapping against the pilings below.
Skylar looked out at the horizon where the dark blue of the ocean met the soft purple of the evening sky.
"I was thinking about how quiet the world gets when you finally stop fighting for things that aren't meant for you," she said softly.
Marcus reached out, his warm, rough hand gently covering hers where it rested on the rail. He didn't squeeze tightly; he simply held it, steady and present.
"You built a good life, Skylar," Marcus said gently. "A real one."
"I did," Skylar smiled, turning her head to look at him. "I built every single inch of it."
Her phone chimed in her handbag sitting on the wooden bench behind them.
She didn't reach for it instantly. In the past, a phone chime meant an emergency, an order from Derek, or a frantic demand from Suzanne for money. Now, it was just a sound.
When she eventually opened her bag and pulled out the screen, she saw a notification from her bank app:
AUTOMATED MONTHLY TRUST STATEMENT: ACCOUNT BALANCES VERIFIED - ALL SYSTEMS SECURE.
Skylar closed the app, set the phone to silent, and dropped it back into her bag.
She looked down at her left hand resting in Marcus’s palm.

There was no ring on her finger. No platinum band, no heavy diamond, no gold wire binding her to a promise made to a man who didn't understand its value.
Her fingers were bare, clean, and entirely her own.
