Chapter 3 - THE FAMILY SUMMONS

By the fifth day of the vacation—or what was left of it—the grand narrative the Bennett family had constructed for thirty years was completely shattered.

My parents and Vanessa hadn't returned to their homes in Charleston. They couldn't.

The Grand Palms Resort had placed their names on a regional hospitality black-list, forcing them to move their luggage into a dingy, two-star roadside motel near the highway because every high-end hotel in the district had flagged Richard Bennett’s declined credit cards.

At 2:00 PM, my phone rang again. This time, it wasn't my parents.

It was my uncle, Thomas Bennett—Richard’s older brother, the patriarch of the family, and the owner of Bennett Global Shipping, the company where my father worked as a senior consultant.

"Claire," Uncle Thomas’s deep, resonant voice echoed through the speaker. He was a man who rarely spoke unless a million dollars was involved. "I am sitting in the boardroom of my office in Charleston. Your father, your mother, and your sister are sitting across from me, crying."

"Are they crying because they left my six-year-old daughter barefoot in a hallway, Uncle Thomas?" I asked quietly. "Or are they crying because their credit cards were declined?"

Thomas let out a long, slow sigh over the line. "I saw the security video, Claire."

I paused, holding my breath. "Who gave you the video?"

"Mr. Marcus Vance at the Grand Palms is a personal friend of mine," Thomas revealed. "He sent the raw feed to my private server three hours ago. I watched your sister lock little Lily out. I watched your father sit on the sofa eating grapes while that child cried against the door."

Silence hung between us for three agonizing seconds.

"What are you going to do, Uncle Thomas?" I asked.

"I called you because I want you to come to Charleston tomorrow morning," Thomas said, his voice dropping into a register of iron resolution. "I am convening an extraordinary meeting of the board of Bennett Global. Your father thinks he summoned this meeting to force you into dropping your lawsuit against his commercial plaza."

"And what is he actually coming to?"

"He’s coming to his own termination hearing," Thomas stated flatly. "And I want you there, Claire. Bring Daniel’s attorney. It’s time to clean house."

The next morning, the sun rose over Charleston in a haze of golden humidity.

I dressed Lily in a sweet white dress, packed our bags into our new rental car, and drove two hours inland toward the historic downtown district where Bennett Global Shipping held its corporate headquarters.

When we stepped out of the glass elevator on the twelfth floor, the corporate reception area was silent as a tomb.

Sitting on the plush leather sofas near the glass walls were my parents and Vanessa.

Vanessa looked destroyed. Her hair was greasy, her makeup was smeared, and she was wearing the same clothes she had worn two days ago. Sitting three feet away from her was Mark—or rather, Mark’s attorney, who was handing Vanessa a stack of legal papers.

Mark had filed for divorce and an emergency asset freeze at six o'clock the previous evening.

My mother, Eleanor, jumped up when she saw me, her eyes red and swollen. "Claire! Claire, please! Look at what you’ve done to your sister! Mark is leaving her! The state tax auditors called our house this morning! How could you do this to your own blood?!"

My father stood up too, but he didn't scream this time. He looked like a man standing on the trapdoor of a gallows, staring at me with a terrifying combination of hatred and helpless panic.

"Claire..." Richard rasped, his hands trembling. "Tell your uncle to stop this. Tell him the lawsuit is a private family matter. If he fires me today, I lose my pension! I lose everything!"

I stopped in front of them, holding Lily close to my side.

"You lost everything the moment you locked that door, Dad," I said, my voice ringing clear and strong through the glass lobby. "You thought because Daniel was dead, I had no one left to fight for me. You thought I was weak because I chose to be quiet."

The double doors of the executive boardroom swung open.

Uncle Thomas stood in the doorway, flanked by three senior corporate attorneys and two uniformed police officers.

"Richard. Eleanor. Vanessa," Uncle Thomas commanded, his voice booming through the lobby. "Step inside."

My father took a shaky breath, looking at me one last time, begging with his eyes. But I didn't blink. I took Lily’s hand, walked past him, and stepped through the doors into the room where my family's empire was about to be laid to rest.
