Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of Blood

Thirty minutes later, we were in the back of an unmarked police cruiser. Because there were no visible physical marks on Emily and Jason had avoided hitting her directly, the officers could only file a domestic dispute report and transport us to a hotel.

I booked a suite at a quiet hotel near downtown Denver under my corporate card, paid in cash for extra security, and requested a room on an upper floor away from the elevators.

After Emily had taken a long, scalding shower and fed little Maya the warm formula, the baby finally fell asleep in the center of the king-sized bed, her tiny chest rising and falling rhythmically.

Emily sat on the edge of the mattress, wrapped in a plush hotel bathrobe, her wet hair draped over her trembling shoulders. I handed her a mug of hot tea from room service.

"Tell me everything, Emily," I said gently, sitting in the armchair beside the bed. "Start from the beginning. What did you find?"

Emily took a small, shaky sip of the tea. "It started four months ago... right after Maya was born. Jason told me his software company had landed a massive government contract. He bought a new car, bought his mother a condo in Long Island, and started insisting that I step down from my design job."

"And you found the bank statements?"

"I found his secondary laptop," Emily corrected, her eyes glistening with fresh tears. "He forgot it on the kitchen island when he left for a golf tournament. I opened it to find a file I needed... and I saw your company's logo on his screen."

My stomach turned to ice. "My company?"

I was the Vice President of Logistics for Vanguard Global, a multinational shipping firm based in Chicago.

"Jason wasn't running a software company, Dad," Emily whispered, looking at me with terror in her eyes. "He was running a shell company called Apex Solutions. Over the last eighteen months, someone inside Vanguard Global has been routing ghost invoices through Apex. Millions of dollars."

"Who?" I demanded, standing up. "Who was signing the authorizations?"

"Your digital signature was on every single one of them," Emily said.

The room went completely silent. The hum of the hotel air conditioner sounded like a roar in my ears.

"He set me up," I realized out loud, the pieces crashing together in my mind with terrifying speed. "He married my daughter... not for her, but to get inside my life. To use my credentials."

"He realized I saw the files," Emily sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "When I confronted him in Manhattan, he acted like it was a mistake. He told me we were going to Colorado to visit his mother and clear things up. But once we crossed the state line into Nebraska... he took my bag, threw my phone out the window, and locked me out of the car at a rest stop."

"He wanted you to disappear," I said, a cold, ruthless clarity settling into my mind. "If you disappeared, you looked like an unstable mother who abandoned her child. If I came looking for you, he'd trigger the paper trail and send the FBI to my front door."

My phone chimed in my pocket.

It was a notification from Vanguard Global’s corporate security portal:
