Chapter 9 - THE AFTERMATH

The arrest of Richard Sterling and Sienna Miller on live international television became the financial scandal of the decade.

By sunset, every major news network was running non-stop coverage under the banner: THE DEAD WIFE RETURNS: THE FALL OF STERLING LOGISTICS.

Richard’s corporate reputation was utterly obliterated within hours. The private equity lenders, realizing their three-hundred-million-dollar loans were backed by fraudulent claims, immediately filed emergency bankruptcy actions against his personal accounts.

Every asset he thought he owned—his clothes, his luxury watches, his personal savings—was seized by the federal government to satisfy court judgments.

Two weeks after the gala, I sat in the executive office on the top floor of Vance Holdings.

The room was bathed in the warm, golden light of the setting sun. Panoramic windows overlooked the glittering skyline of Dallas. On my oak desk sat a glass of sparkling water and a fresh stack of corporate restructuring reports.

Arthur Pendelton walked into the office, holding a leather briefcase.

"Good evening, Victoria," Arthur smiled warmly, taking a seat opposite me. "I have the final updates from the District Attorney's office."

"How are our guests doing in federal custody?" I asked, taking a sip of water.

"Richard rejected a plea deal this morning," Arthur reported. "Given the video evidence provided by your hidden cameras—showing explicit medical neglect, physical intimidation, and corporate extortion—the judge set his bail at fifty million dollars, which he obviously cannot pay. He is facing up to twenty-five years in federal penitentiary without possibility of parole."

"And Sienna?"

"Her legal defense tried to claim she was an innocent bystander," Arthur chuckled softly. "However, the wire transfers carrying her electronic signature to the Cayman accounts proved otherwise. She is facing five years for federal conspiracy to commit grand larceny. Her family’s properties in Houston have also been seized to cover court restitution costs."

I closed my eyes briefly, letting out a long, quiet breath. The justice was absolute, complete, and unappealable.

"And Sterling Logistics?" I asked, opening my eyes.

"The stock market reacted to your return with unprecedented enthusiasm," Arthur smiled proudly. "The moment you announced you were taking over as CEO and Chairwoman of the Board, the company’s stock value jumped by forty percent in a single day. The board voted unanimously yesterday to officially rename the entity Vance Global Enterprises."

I stood up, walking over to the panoramic window.

The city below was alive with lights, movement, and infinite possibility. I looked at my reflection in the glass. The frail, pale woman who had been banished to a slate-gray guest room was gone forever. Standing in her place was a titan—unbroken, victorious, and completely free.

"Victoria," Arthur said softly, standing beside me. "What are you going to do with the estate?"

May you like

I smiled, watching a flock of birds fly across the golden twilight sky.

"Tear it down to the studs, Arthur," I said quietly. "And build something fresh. Something brighter."
