Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Madison

Over the next three weeks, the true extent of Madison’s desperation began to reveal itself.

Without my father’s financial backing, Madison’s pristine life began to fracture at the seams. Her husband, David—who had been kept completely in the dark about her manipulation of my pregnancy—was mortified by the revelation.

Aunt Clara called me on a Tuesday afternoon to deliver the gossip.

“David had no idea, Olivia!” Clara whispered conspiratorially over the phone. “When he found out she threw away your baby shower invitations and lied about your postpartum depression, he went ballistic. He moved out of their master bedroom. And then, when Richard froze her accounts, David realized they couldn't afford the mortgage on that massive house without your father’s monthly subsidy!”

“Is he leaving her?” I asked, putting Isabella into her high chair for lunch.

“He threatened to,” Clara said. “He told her that unless she got down on her knees and begged for your forgiveness, he was filing for divorce before their baby was even born. He doesn't want his child raised by someone who could do something so wicked to her own sister.”

While Madison’s personal life was collapsing, my father was trying frantically to rebuild his relationship with me.

Every day, a delivery arrived at our house. Not grand, ostentatious gifts, but small, thoughtful gestures. A box of my favorite organic tea. A handwritten letter recounting a fond memory from my childhood. A handmade wooden rocking chair for Isabella’s nursery that he had carved himself in his garage—a hobby he hadn't touched since my mother died.

I didn't reject the gifts, but I didn't rush to invite him over either. I needed time to heal. I needed to see if his change of heart was permanent or merely a temporary panic caused by guilt.

Finally, on a quiet Sunday afternoon, I called him.

“Dad?”

The line was quiet for a second, followed by a shaky exhale. “Olivia? Oh God, Olivia... hello.”

“Are you free this afternoon?” I asked gently. “Carlos and I are taking Isabella to the park near our house. If you’d like... you can meet us there.”

There was a silence on the line so long I thought the call had dropped, until I heard him clear his throat, his voice thick with tears. “I’ll be there in twenty minutes. Thank you, sweetheart. Thank you.”
