Chapter 4 - The Surgical Strike

By 8:00 AM the following morning, my penthouse had become a war room. I hadn't slept a single wink. I sat at the glass dining table, stripped of my suit jacket, my sleeves rolled up, surrounded by three of the most cutthroat forensic accountants and corporate attorneys in the tri-state area. Leading them was Arthur Pendelton, an old family friend who had served as my late father’s personal legal counsel before Eleanor pushed him out for being "too unyielding."

"Are you absolutely certain about this, Preston?" Arthur asked, adjusting his spectacles as he looked over a thick stack of financial ledgers. "If we execute this strategy, you aren't just leaving the Vance Corporation. You are triggering a structural collapse. The family trust is heavily leveraged against your personal logistics subsidiaries."

"I want it collapsed, Arthur," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion as I took a sip of black coffee. "My father left fifty-one percent of the voting shares of the logistics division directly to me. My mother and Gabriela only hold the real estate and hospitality portfolios, which are currently bleeding cash due to their poor management. They’ve been using my division's profits as a personal piggy bank to fund their high-society lifestyles."

"That they have," one of the forensic accountants chimed in, tapping a laptop screen. "Over the past six months alone, Eleanor Vance has authorized over twelve million dollars in lifestyle drawdowns from the logistics operational account, classifying them as 'promotional expenses' for those grand galas she throws. It's highly irregular, bordering on corporate embezzlement."

A cold smile touched my lips. "Excellent. Draft a formal freeze on all shared corporate accounts effective immediately. By noon today, I want every asset tied to my name completely insulated. If my mother wants to draw another dime for her champagne parties, she can sell her diamonds."

Just as Arthur began to type out the formal injunction, my private cell phone began to vibrate violently against the glass table. The caller ID displayed Eleanor's name. I let it ring until it timed out, only for it to instantly light up again with Gabriela’s number.

I picked it up, sliding the bar to answer, and placed it on speakerphone.

"Preston! You absolute lunatic!" Gabriela’s voice screeched through the speaker, her usual aristocratic poise completely shattered by panic. "What have you done? The corporate treasury just rejected Mother’s signature on the commercial real estate acquisition wire! The bank says our credit lines are under emergency review!"

"Good morning, Gabriela," I said smoothly. "The system works faster than I anticipated."

"Are you insane?" she gasped, and I could hear the faint, frantic sound of Eleanor shouting in the background. "You cannot do this to us! We are your family! Do you have any idea the kind of rumors that are circulating this morning? Half the guests from last night are calling to ask why your white-trash wife was dressed like a beggar in our living room! Mother is on the verge of a nervous breakdown!"

"Tell Eleanor to save her tears for the courtroom," I replied, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Because I’m not just freezing the accounts, Gabriela. My legal team is currently drafting a formal criminal complaint for corporate fraud regarding the twelve million dollars you two skimmed from my division. Furthermore, I am preparing a civil lawsuit for unlawful confinement, emotional abuse, and labor exploitation on behalf of my wife."

A dead, heavy silence fell over the line. Even the background shouting stopped.

"You... you wouldn't dare," Gabriela whispered, her voice finally losing its teeth. "A public lawsuit like that... it would destroy the Vance reputation forever. We would be pariahs."

May you like

"You should have thought about the reputation before you put a cot in the service kitchen, sister," I said coldly. "You have twenty-four hours to vacate the primary estate. I own the deed to that land, and tomorrow morning, the security teams will be changing the locks. Enjoy your day."

I hung up the phone without waiting for a reply and turned back to Arthur. "File the paperwork. Let's see how long they survive without my money."
