Chapter 9 - The Trial of Vanessa Cole

Six months later.

The Supreme Court of the State of New York was packed to capacity. Journalists, legal analysts, and members of the public crowded the wooden benches to watch the final sentencing of the state versus Vanessa Cole.

Vanessa sat at the defense table wearing a drab orange jumpsuit, her hands handcuffed to her waist. Her hair was pulled back into a messy bun, her face hollow and devoid of the polished charm she had once wielded like a weapon.

Judge Thomas Harrison adjusted his glasses, reviewing the massive stack of evidence before him.

"Vanessa Cole," Judge Harrison spoke, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "You have been found guilty of attempted first-degree murder, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and evidence tampering. Your actions were not merely criminal; they were calculated, cold-blooded, and displayed a profound disregard for human life."

He looked over at the prosecution table, where Ethan and Nora sat together, holding hands. Ethan looked healthy and full of life, his face color restored, his shoulder resting protective against his wife. Nora looked stunning, holding a happy, seven-month-old Wren in her lap.

"Under the laws of New York," Judge Harrison declared, "I sentence you to forty-five years at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility without the possibility of parole."

BANG!

The gavel struck the wooden block.

Vanessa was led away in handcuffs, not daring to look back at the family she had tried so ruthlessly to destroy.

As they walked out onto the courtroom steps, surrounded by flashing cameras and news reporters, Detective Caleb Ross met them near the marble pillars.

Caleb smiled, tipping his hat to Nora and offering a warm handshake to Ethan.

"How’s the heart holding up, Whitaker?" Caleb asked.

"Beating better than ever, Detective," Ethan smiled, wrapping his arm around Nora’s waist. "Thanks to you."

"Just doing my job," Caleb said softly, reaching out to let tiny Wren grab his finger. "You've got a tough wife, Ethan. She fought through a blizzard and a murder charge to save your life."

"I know," Ethan said, looking down at Nora with profound adoration. "She’s my hero."
