Chapter 6 - The Liquidation

The downfall was neither slow nor subtle. Within forty-eight hours of the court ruling, the dominoes fell with terrifying speed.

Deprived of capital backing and destroyed by public outrage, Carter Enterprises filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The grand construction sites were boarded up, their cranes standing motionless against the city skyline like hollow monuments to Mark’s arrogance.

Mark sat alone in his empty luxury apartment—the lease for which was now three weeks overdue. The designer furniture had been tagged by bank assessors; his sports car had been repossessed from the subterranean garage two nights prior.

His phone rang on the bare floor beside his folding chair. He lunged for it, his hands shaking, hoping against hope it was his lawyer with news of a settlement.

It was Madison.

"Mark?" her voice sounded distant, mixed with the background hum of an international airport terminal.

"Madison!" Mark gasped, gripping the phone like a lifeline. "Where are you? I’ve been trying to reach you for days. My accounts are locked, but if I can just secure a private personal loan from your father’s firm, I can file an appeal—"

"Mark, stop," Madison cut him off, her voice devoid of any warmth or emotion. "I’m calling from Paris. I’m not coming back."

Mark felt a cold knot tighten in his gut. "What do you mean you're not coming back? Madison, I blew up my family for you! I left Emily in that hospital because you said you needed me!"

"You left Emily because you’re a weak man who wanted to feel important," Madison spat out with cruel precision. "You liked having a pretty woman on your arm while your wife quietly managed your life behind the scenes. Don't blame me for your stupidity, Mark. My father’s board reviewed your company’s balance sheets. You're broke. You owe thirty-five million dollars to Vance Capital, and your name is poison in this city."

"Madison, please—"

"Do not call this number again," she said flatly, and the line went dead.

Mark dropped the phone onto the floorboards. He stared at his reflection in the dark, unwashed patio glass. The high-powered executive he had pretended to be for four years had vanished, leaving behind only a hollow, bankrupt husk.

That evening, Mark walked on foot through the rainy city streets, his coat soaked through, until he reached the gates of the Vance Private Estate on the edge of the coastal hills. The iron gates were closed, guarded by two private security vehicles.

He fell to his knees in the wet gravel outside the intercom pillar, pressing the red button again and again.

"Emily! Emily, please!" he sobbed into the speaker, his voice breaking as the rain poured down his face. "I was wrong! I know I was wrong! Please, just let me see the babies! Let me see Grace! Let me see Lily! Let me see Hope! I’ll sign whatever you want! Just don't erase me!"

The intercom crackled softly to life.

For a second, Mark’s heart surged with desperate hope. "Emily?"

"Mr. Carter," Ethan Vance’s voice came through the speaker, crisp, calm, and utterly unyielding. "Mrs. Carter is currently putting her daughters to sleep. If you remain on this property for another sixty seconds, the guards will arrest you for violating the restraining order."

"Ethan, please! Tell her I'm sorry! Tell her I'll do anything!" Mark screamed against the cold metal grille.

"She knows you're sorry, Mark," Ethan replied quietly. "You're sorry because you lost. Now get off our land."

The speaker clicked off. The gate lights flickered silently in the dark, leaving Mark alone in the mud.
