Chapter 6 - The Public Reckoning

The Grand Ballroom of the Manhattan Plaza Hotel was packed to capacity with hundreds of journalists, news cameras, and financial correspondents. The air was electric with anticipation, flashes of light constantly strobing as the media waited for the CEO of Sterling Global to address the scandal that had rocked the market.
Behind the heavy velvet curtains off-stage, I adjusted Miles’s tie.
"You're ready," I said softly, looking up into his focused eyes.
"We're ready," Miles corrected, taking my hand and giving it a firm squeeze. "I want you on stage with me, Serena."
I blinked in surprise. "On stage? Miles, I'm not a corporate spokesperson."
"You are the senior analyst who uncovered the financial fraud," Miles stated firmly. "You are the head of the special task force I am appointing today to oversee the restructuring of our regional distribution network. And... you are the woman standing by my side."
Before I could process the massive career leap he was casually handing me, the stage manager signaled that it was time.
Miles took a deep breath, adjusted his jacket, and held out his arm. I took it, squaring my shoulders, and stepped out onto the stage into the blinding sea of camera flashes.
The noise in the room deafened as reporters began shouting questions all at once.
Miles stepped up to the podium, his posture immaculate, his presence commanding total silence within seconds. He didn't look at notes. He didn't look nervous. He simply stared directly into the main television camera.
"Good afternoon," Miles began, his voice echoing clearly through the massive ballroom speakers. "Over the past twelve hours, speculation regarding the financial integrity of Sterling Global has threatened to undermine the trust of our shareholders, our employees, and the public. I am here today to deliver the absolute truth."
The room went dead silent.
"The media reports published last night detailing inventory discrepancies in our Connecticut hub were correct," Miles announced calmly.
A wave of collective gasps rippled through the press corps.
"However," Miles continued, his tone turning into cold steel, "what the leak failed to mention is that these discrepancies were not the result of corporate negligence. They were the result of a sophisticated internal embezzlement scheme executed by a former regional manager named Marcus Vance, aided by fraudulent documentation created by junior staff member Lois Vance."
The flashes multiplied exponentially. Reporters began frantically typing on their laptops.
"As of one hour ago," Miles said, "formal criminal charges for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and insider trading have been filed against Marcus Vance by the District Attorney's office. Lois Vance has been terminated from her position and is currently assisting law enforcement with their investigation."
He turned slightly, gesturing toward me.
"To ensure complete transparency, Sterling Global has appointed Serena Vance—a premier financial analyst who personally uncovered the paper trail detailing the embezzlement—to lead an independent audit task force. Her findings have already been submitted to the SEC, proving that our core operations remain completely secure and solvent."
A reporter from the Wall Street Journal stood up, shouting over the crowd. "Mr. Sterling! Is it true that the whistleblowers in this case were connected to your private life? What is your personal relationship with Serena Vance?"
Miles looked at the reporter. Then, he looked at me.
A soft, warm smile touched his lips—a stark contrast to his stern corporate demeanor.
"Serena Vance is the smartest, most honorable analyst I have ever had the privilege of working with," Miles declared proudly, his voice carrying through the microphone for millions of viewers worldwide to hear. "She is the future of our analytical division. And she is also the woman I love."
The room completely exploded.
Questions were shouted, cameras went into a frenzy, but I couldn't hear any of it. My heart was pounding so loudly in my ears that the world seemed to fade away.
The woman I love.

I looked at Miles as he stepped back from the podium. He walked over to me, took my hand in front of every news camera in North America, and gently kissed the back of my fingers.
In that moment, watching the news feed broadcast live across the big screens in the hotel, I knew that back in Connecticut, my mother, my father, and Lois were watching. They were watching the daughter they had discarded, the sister they had mocked, standing at the pinnacle of power, prestige, and love—unreachable, unshakeable, and completely free.
