Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

The interrogation room at the Federal Building in downtown Seattle smelled of stale coffee and industrial floor cleaner.

Adrian sat at the metal table, his hands cuffed to a ring bolted to the steel surface. His expensive tuxedo jacket was gone, his shirt rumpled and stained with sweat. Across from him sat two agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Division, alongside Assistant United States Attorney Richard Vance.

"Let’s review the evidence, Mr. Locke," AUSA Vance said, opening a thick blue binder filled with financial spreadsheets. "Over the last thirty-six months, you transferred approximately $4.2 million from Helios Holdings subsidiary accounts into an unlisted offshore LLC in the Cayman Islands registered under the name V&A Global Enterprises."

Adrian blinked frantically, his face pale. "That... that was an offshore investment vehicle for land acquisition!"

"Registered under the joint names of Adrian Locke and Vanessa Reeve," Vance corrected smoothly, tapping a red line on the paper. "Except the money used to fund that account belonged to the estate trust of the late Eleanor Whitmore—Claire Whitmore’s mother. You forged your wife’s signature on four separate wire authorization forms."

"I had implied authority!" Adrian stammered, his voice rising in desperation. "She was my wife! We shared assets!"

"You didn't share assets, Mr. Locke," Agent Miller interjected, leaning forward. "Your prenuptial agreement—which you foolishly signed six years ago thinking she had no money—explicitly stated that all pre-marital inheritances and trust funds remained sole, separate property. You had zero legal right to touch a single penny of that trust."

The door to the interrogation room opened.

Samuel Pike walked in, holding a slim leather briefcase. Behind him walked Marcus Brody, Adrian’s former CFO, who was wearing a nervous sweat and carrying a stack of internal company drives.

Adrian’s eyes widened. "Marcus! Tell them! Tell them you handled the wire transfers!"

Marcus didn't even look at Adrian. He turned directly to the prosecutors. "I’ve agreed to a full proffer agreement with the Justice Department, Mr. Vance. I’ve turned over all internal accounting ledgers, email exchanges, and recorded phone calls proving that Adrian explicitly ordered me to forge Mrs. Whitmore’s signatures and hide the transfers from external auditors."

"You traitor!" Adrian lunged across the table, but the steel cuffs yanked him back violently, the metal biting into his wrists. "I gave you a job! I made you!"

"You made me complicit in federal crimes!" Marcus yelled back, his voice trembling with anger. "You told me your wife’s family was dead! You told me Helios Holdings was your personal venture capital firm! You ruined my life!"

Samuel Pike stepped forward, placing a single document in front of Adrian.

"This is an emergency petition for asset forfeiture and global freeze orders, Adrian," Samuel said, his tone as cold as winter ice. "By noon today, every personal account you hold—including your private checking, your stock portfolios, and your offshore Cayman accounts—has been frozen by court order. The residence in Bellevue is undergoing civil asset forfeiture. Even your luxury vehicles have been impounded."

Adrian felt a cold sweat drenching his back. "You can't leave me with nothing... I need money for my defense attorney!"

"The court will appoint a public defender," Samuel replied flatly. "Because right now, according to the official financial record of the United States Treasury... you are worth exactly zero dollars."

"What about Vanessa?" Adrian choked out, grasping at straws. "She has the house in Palm Springs! We can sell that!"

Samuel chuckled softly, a sound filled with pity and utter contempt.

"Miss Reeve was released from federal custody two hours ago after giving a complete sworn statement against you," Samuel revealed. "She claimed she was an innocent victim of your financial deception. Furthermore, when she realized your accounts were frozen, she immediately packed three suitcases, took every designer bag you bought her, and caught a flight to Miami with a minor nightlife promoter. She hasn't mentioned your name once."

The news hit Adrian like a physical blow to the chest.

Vanessa was gone. The money was gone. The company was gone. His reputation was utterly destroyed.

"Claire..." Adrian whispered, tears of terror and humiliation finally spilling over his hollow cheeks. "Please, Samuel... let me speak to Claire. Let me tell her I’m sorry. I’ll do anything. I’ll sign whatever she wants. Just tell her to talk to me!"

Samuel closed his briefcase with a sharp snap.

He leaned down until his eyes were inches from Adrian’s trembling face.

"Claire is currently resting in her family’s estate, surrounded by world-class doctors, preparing to give birth to a child who will never know your name," Samuel said softly. "You will never speak to her again. You will never see her again. And when your daughter is born... her birth certificate will list her father as Unknown."

May you like

"No!" Adrian screamed, thrashing against the metal table. "She’s my daughter! You can't take my child!"

"You surrendered your rights to that child the moment you left her mother bleeding on an emergency room floor to chase a lie," Samuel said, turning toward the door. "Enjoy federal prison, Adrian. You built your house on sand... and the tide has finally come in."
