Chapter 9 - The Letters from the Shadow

Three days after the ribbon-cutting ceremony, I sat at my office desk in Seattle, reviewing new architectural design blueprints for a commercial client.

The afternoon mail lay sitting beside my laptop.

Among the utility bills and design magazines sat a white, plain envelope stamped with official red ink from the Washington State Department of Corrections.

The return address read: Correctional Facility for Women, Gig Harbor, WA.

I sat back in my chair, looking at the envelope for a long moment.

I picked up an ivory letter opener, slid it neatly through the top fold, and pulled out the single sheet of lined notebook paper inside.

The handwriting was jagged, thin, and desperate—written in blue ballpoint pen.

Elena,

They moved me to the medium-security wing last week. The trial date has been set for October. My public defender says the prosecution is refusing to offer a plea deal under seven years.

I know you were at the Leavenworth opening. I saw the article in the local newspaper in the prison library. You put my father’s land into a public trust. You gave away what belonged to our family.

Do you feel good about yourself? Do you feel powerful now that you’ve destroyed my life, turned my mother against me, and ruined Ethan?

You think you won. But you’re still just the outsider who came into our house and tore it apart.

Vanessa

I read the letter once.

I didn't feel rage. I didn't feel satisfaction. I felt nothing at all for the woman who had spent her life devouring everyone around her, only to end up sitting in a cold cell, still convinced she was the victim.

I picked up the letter, folded it once, and slid it directly into the shredder beside my desk.

The mechanical blades whirred to life, catching the paper, cutting it into thin, meaningless strips of white confetti that dropped quietly into the bin below.

My phone chimed on the desk.

It was a text from Sophie:

“Mommy! Uncle Daniel took me to get ice cream after soccer practice! Can we bring chocolate chip home for dinner? 🍦”

I smiled, typing back:

“Bring two tubs, sweetie. We have a lot to celebrate.”
