Chapter 5 - The Press Conference

The media horde camped outside the district courthouse on Tuesday morning looked like a swarm of locusts. Microphones bristled against the metal barricades, camera lenses flashed in rapid-fire succession, and reporters shouted over one another, screaming questions about bloodied wedding gowns, corporate embezzlement, and elite family feuds.
When the black SUV pulled up to the courthouse steps, the noise reached a deafening crescendo.
Nathan stepped out first, scanning the crowd with cold, intimidating authority before opening the rear door and offering his hand.
Elena emerged into the blinding glare of the flashbulbs. She wore a tailored black wool coat, dark oversized sunglasses, and her dark hair swept back in a flawless ponytail. There was no trace of fear in her stride. She walked with the absolute, unshakable posture of a woman who had walked through fire and emerged forged in steel.
Flanked by her legal team, she stepped up to the podium. The microphone feedback squealed before dying down as she raised her hand for silence.
“Good morning,” Elena said, her voice projecting clearly across the courtyard, carrying over the hum of the cameras.
The crowd instantly quieted, hanging on her every word.
“Over the past seventy-two hours, my wedding day—a celebration of love, family, and new beginnings—was violently interrupted by an act of criminal assault and corporate extortion committed by my brother, Adrian Lark.”
A collective gasp rippled through the press corps. Flashbulbs strobed like lightning in a storm.
“For years,” Elena continued, her tone steady, devoid of self-pity or theatrical grief, “society has whispered about the dark underbelly of family-run businesses—where female founders are expected to surrender their autonomy, their intellectual property, and their physical safety to appease entitled male relatives. We are told to keep the peace. We are told to sweep abuse under the rug in the name of ‘family harmony.’”
She paused, removing her sunglasses, letting the cameras capture the cool, hard resolve in her eyes.
“I am here to tell you today that the era of keeping the peace is over. My brother is currently sitting in a jail cell awaiting arraignment not just for felony assault, but for corporate embezzlement, fraud, and forgery. The legal system is taking its course, and he will face the maximum penalty under the law.”
A reporter from the Boston Globe shouted out from the front row. “Ms. Lark! What is your message to women in business facing similar intimidation from male family members?”
Elena looked directly into the camera lens, her voice ringing out with absolute clarity.

“Do not surrender. Do not be silent. Document everything. Protect your work, protect your body, and never let anyone convince you that your bloodline gives them the right to steal your future.”
With that, she turned away from the podium, ignoring the shouting wall of reporters, and walked back into the courthouse to ensure the indictment was sealed permanently.
