Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of the Lies

Over the next three weeks, the legal storm around the Thorne and Marsh families escalated into a full-scale public spectacle.

The federal prosecutor presented undeniable digital evidence showing that Marcus Thorne had systematically funneled diverted military funds into personal accounts, paying off credit debts racked up by Chloe during their eighteen-month engagement. The lavish engagement party—the very party where Marcus had poured wine over Zariah’s dress—had been funded using stolen defense grant money.

Without Marcus's wealth to shield them, Jonathan and Eleanor were forced to confront their own mountain of debt. For years, they had lived well beyond their means, relying on Zariah's regular transfers to cover their mortgage, luxury vehicles, and Chloe's endless "business ventures."

When Zariah’s legal team officially severed all joint bank accounts and placed a legal hold on the Marsh family home—which Zariah had secretly bought out from under foreclosure five years ago to keep them off the street—the harsh reality set in.

Jonathan called an emergency family dinner.

They sat at the long dining room table that had once been the site of endless celebrations for Chloe’s minor achievements. Tonight, there were no floral arrangements, no wine, and no caterers.

Zariah sat at the head of the table. Beside her sat her attorney, Captain Sarah Lin, a fierce military legal advocate who had served with Zariah overseas.

"This house," Sarah Lin announced, laying out a series of legal deeds, "is 100% owned by Major Zariah Marsh. The property tax, the structural repairs, and the remaining mortgage were cleared by Zariah three years ago using her combat deployment bonus."

Eleanor gasped. "This is our home!"

"It was your home while you treated the person paying for it with basic human respect," Sarah Lin countered coolly. "Effective thirty days from today, the lease agreement is terminated. Major Marsh is placing the property on the market."

Chloe slammed her hands on the table. "Where are we supposed to live? I don't have a job! Marcus's accounts are frozen, and everyone in town is laughing at me!"

Zariah looked across the table at her sister. "You’re twenty-four years old, Chloe. You have two arms, two legs, and a college education I paid for. It's time you learned what a sixteen-hour shift actually feels like."
