CHAPTER 6 — THE TRUTH GOES PUBLIC

The first camera flash hit like lightning.
Then another.
Then a storm.
By the time Victoria Kensington guided me out of the courthouse, the steps were already packed with reporters who had somehow learned what had happened inside before the official statement was even released.
Voices collided in the air.
“Is it true you’ve identified your daughter after 27 years?”
“Was Ethan Walker arrested inside the courtroom?”
“Is this connected to the Kensington inheritance scandal?”
I flinched at the noise.
Victoria didn’t.
Her hand stayed firmly at my back as she moved forward, shielding me without hiding me.
The federal agents formed a line ahead, clearing a path.
But the world was already leaning in.
Too late to stop it.
Too hungry to slow down.
Victoria stopped at the bottom of the courthouse steps.
Just for a second.
And then she turned toward the cameras.
The crowd quieted instantly.
Not because they were told to.
Because they recognized her.
Power has a sound even when it’s silent.
“My name is Victoria Kensington,” she said.
Her voice didn’t amplify.
It didn’t need to.
“I am here to confirm that Madison Walker is my biological daughter, abducted at birth through a coordinated hospital fraud network.”
A ripple went through the crowd.
Phones lifted higher.
Hands trembled as they recorded.
Victoria continued.
“This case is now under federal investigation for identity theft, financial exploitation, and inheritance manipulation involving multiple corporate entities.”
A reporter shouted, “Can you name the companies involved?”
Victoria didn’t hesitate.
“Not yet,” she said. “But you will hear them soon.”
That answer landed heavier than any name would have.
Because it meant more was coming.
Much more.
She turned slightly toward me.
And for the first time, I saw something softer in her public mask.
Not weakness.
Protection.
“This is my daughter,” she said, voice tightening just slightly. “And she will not be hidden again.”
The crowd erupted.
Questions exploded again, louder this time.
But Victoria was already moving.
We were escorted into a waiting vehicle.
The door closed.
And suddenly—
Silence.
Inside the car, the world felt unreal.
Like it had been turned down in volume but not removed entirely.
My hands were still shaking.
I stared at the passing city outside the tinted window.
Everything looked the same.
But nothing was.
“They’re going to dig into everything,” I said quietly.
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.”
I swallowed.
“Even me?”
Her answer came immediately.
“Especially you.”
I looked at her sharply.
She softened.
“Not because you’ve done anything wrong,” she said. “Because they will try to rewrite your identity again if they can.”
My throat tightened.
“I don’t even know what my identity is anymore,” I admitted.
Victoria reached over and placed her hand over mine.
“You will,” she said. “We’ll rebuild it.”
A pause.
Then she added quietly, “Properly this time.”
The car stopped at a secured estate surrounded by black gates and tall trees.
Reporters were already trying to follow.
Security cut them off instantly.
Inside the gates, everything changed again.
Quiet returned.
But this quiet felt different.
Not empty.
Safe.
The front doors opened before we reached them.
A staff member bowed slightly.
“Welcome home, Ms. Kensington,” she said.
The word hit me strangely.
Home.
Victoria noticed my reaction.
She didn’t correct it.
Just guided me inside.
The house was large.
Too large.
But not cold.
Not like Ethan’s world had been.
This place felt… lived in.
Not curated.
There were photos along the hallway.
Victoria at events.
Victoria with charities.
Victoria standing alone at empty tables.
And then—
A small empty frame at the end.
Waiting.
My chest tightened.
“You left that space for me,” I said quietly.
Victoria didn’t look away from it.
“Yes,” she said.
We reached a sitting room where a television was already on.
Breaking news coverage.
“ETHAN WALKER TAKEN INTO FEDERAL CUSTODY IN EXPANDING FRAUD CASE.”
My stomach turned slightly at his name.
Footage played.
Him being led into a vehicle.
No longer confident.
No longer untouchable.
Just a man whose world had stopped agreeing with him.
A reporter’s voice filled the room:
“Authorities confirm that multiple offshore accounts tied to Walker Legal Group have been frozen. Additional arrests are expected.”
Victoria turned off the screen.
“Good,” she said simply.
I looked at her.
“You’re not even surprised.”
“I prepared for this possibility for years,” she said. “I just didn’t have the missing piece.”
Her gaze softened toward me.
“You were the missing piece.”
A silence stretched between us.
Then my phone buzzed.
I hesitated before looking.
Unknown number.
Message preview:
You think this is over? You were never the target. You were the key.
My blood ran cold.
Another message followed immediately.
Tell Victoria she’s too late.
I froze.
Victoria noticed instantly.
“What is it?”
I showed her.
Her expression didn’t panic.
Didn’t shift into fear.
But something in her eyes changed.
Recognition.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
She stood slowly.
And for the first time since she entered the courtroom, her voice lowered.
“This is bigger than I thought,” she said.
My heart started beating faster.
“What do you mean?”
She looked toward the window.
Toward the gates.
Toward the world outside that was no longer quiet.
“This wasn’t just Ethan,” she said.
A pause.
“This is a network.”
Another pause.
“And someone inside it still thinks they can reach you.”
The message on my phone lit up again.
No number.
Just text:
We will take what belongs to us.
My hand went instinctively to my stomach.
Victoria stepped closer immediately.
“No,” she said firmly.
Not loud.
Not dramatic.
Absolute.
“Not this time.”
And for the first time since all of this began—
I believed her.
May you like
But somewhere far beyond the gates…
Someone was already deciding how to prove her wrong.
