Chapter 4: The Ink of Truth

The next morning, the mansion was peaceful. The caterers had cleaned up the ballroom in the early hours of the dawn, and the grand house felt larger, quieter, and infinitely lighter.

Grace arrived at the main dining room at nine o'clock, leading Lily by the hand. Lily was wearing a simple blue romper, her spirits entirely recovered as she carried a box of crayons. Ethan was already sitting at the table, dressed in a simple flannel shirt and jeans, a contrast to the sharp tuxedo he had worn the night before. On the table before him sat the leather journal, open, and the letter from his mother.

"Good morning, Lily. Good morning, Grace," Ethan said, standing up to pull out their chairs himself.

"Good morning, Mr. Cole," Grace said, feeling a bit out of place but comforted by the genuine warmth in his expression.

"Please, call me Ethan," he said, signaling the kitchen staff to bring out a mountain of blueberry pancakes, chocolate waffles, and fresh fruit—a breakfast designed specifically to delight a four-year-old.

As Lily enthusiastically dug into her waffles, Ethan looked at Grace, his fingers lightly touching his mother's letter. "I read it last night," he murmured. "My mother wrote it when she first found out she was sick. She knew she wouldn't see my thirty-fifth birthday. She told me that wealth would bring a lot of noise into my life—people who wanted to manage me, people who wanted to use my name. She told me to look for the people who notice the purple dragons."

Grace smiled gently. "She sounds like she was a very wise woman."

"She was," Ethan said, his eyes locking onto Grace’s. "And she was right. For years, I’ve been letting people like Brooke run my life because it was easier than fighting the noise. But when I saw Brooke treat your daughter that way... and when I saw how you stood by her, ready to protect her no matter what... I realized what a real family looks like. My mother wanted me to remember who I was. Lily gave me that back."

Over the next few weeks, the dynamics of the Cole estate shifted entirely. Grace was no longer permitted to clean the floors. Ethan had reviewed her employment file and discovered she held a degree in early childhood development from before her troubled marriage forced her into hiding. He immediately offered her a position managing the Cole Tech Foundation's new corporate childcare initiative, a project he had long ignored but now threw his entire heart into.

Grace moved out of her cramped apartment into a beautiful, sunlit cottage on the edge of the Greenwich estate. Lily had free rein of the gardens, her laughter becoming a daily fixture near the white roses where Brooke had once banned her.

But the corporate world did not let go so easily. Brooke Ashford was not a woman to suffer humiliation silently.
