Chapter 4 - The Strike of the Subpoenas

Forty-eight hours later. Thursday, 9:15 AM.

The sun was streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Cross Luxury Properties, the ultra-exclusive real estate firm owned by my brother-in-law, Grant Cross, located in the heart of Denver’s affluent Cherry Creek shopping district.

Grant was standing behind his glass desk, wearing an Italian wool suit, showing a million-dollar penthouse listing to a wealthy prospective buyer on a giant digital screen. Beside him, Vanessa was sitting in a white leather armchair, sipping an iced latte, wearing a designer cashmere coat.

The front glass doors opened.

Two uniformed officers from the Denver County Sheriff's Department stepped into the showroom, accompanied by a sharp-looking female investigator carrying a thick stack of blue-bound legal documents.

"Grant Cross?" the lead officer called out, his voice echoing across the polished marble floor.

Grant turned, a polished customer-service smile appearing on his face. "Yes? Can I help you officers? If this is about the parking permits for our client gala—"

"Grant Cross and Vanessa Bennett-Cross," the female investigator interrupted, walking briskly toward the desk. "I am Investigator Sarah Lin from the Office of the District Attorney, Financial Crimes Division. I am serving you with an Emergency Injunction and Temporary Restraining Order issued by Judge Patricia Reyes of the Second Judicial District Court."

Vanessa froze, her iced latte stopping mid-air. "Excuse me? What is this?"

Investigator Lin set two heavy legal packets onto the glass desk with a loud, resounding thud.

"Under Court Order 24-CV-9901, all personal and corporate bank accounts associated with VBC Enterprises LLC, Cross Luxury Properties, and The Eleanor Bennett Family Trust have been frozen effective eight o'clock this morning," Investigator Lin announced cleanly.

Grant’s face turned from tan to ghostly pale. "Frozen?! You can't freeze my corporate accounts! I have payroll due tomorrow! I have three closing transactions in escrow!"

"Your escrow accounts are locked under federal banking seizure protocols, Mr. Cross," Investigator Lin continued without blinking. "We are executing a search warrant for all financial records, computer hard drives, land lease agreements, and trust ledger documentation pertaining to the Weld County property."

"This is insane!" Vanessa shrieked, jumping out of her leather chair, her designer purse sliding off her lap onto the floor. "On what grounds?! Who authorized this?!"

Investigator Lin pulled a final single-sheet document from her folder and handed it directly to Vanessa.

"The petition was filed by Dr. Kenneth Boyd on behalf of your sister, Claire Bennett-Miller," Investigator Lin said calmly. "A court-appointed handwriting forensic expert confirmed this morning that your signature was traced onto page three of the trust amendment. You are under active investigation for Grand Larceny, Bank Fraud, and Forgery."

Vanessa gasped, clutching the paper to her chest, her eyes wide with sheer terror. "Claire... Claire did this?!"

"A forensic team will be arriving in twenty minutes to seize your office servers, Mr. Cross," Investigator Lin added, turning toward the door. "I advise you both to retain criminal defense counsel immediately."

Across town, in a cozy coffee shop near my kids' school, I sat at a small wooden table with Kenneth Boyd.

My phone chimed on the table. It was a text message from an unknown number:

Claire, how could you do this to your own sister?! Grant’s business is ruined! The banks locked our credit cards! The kids are terrified! Call me right now!

I didn't reply. I simply slid the phone across the table to Kenneth.

Kenneth looked at the message, let out a dry chuckle, and tapped his pen against his coffee cup.

"Phase One is complete, Claire," Kenneth said smoothly. "Her accounts are frozen. Her credit is cut off. Grant’s brokerage firm will be insolvent by the end of the week. They can no longer use your mother's stolen wealth to fight us."

"What’s Phase Two?" I asked, my heart pounding with a mix of adrenaline and quiet triumph.

"Phase Two," Kenneth smiled, "is when we bring them into court under oath. And force them to give back every single cent."
