Chapter 3 - The Sheriff’s Visit

The drawing room doors swung open, and Sheriff Donald Miller walked in, his heavy boots thudding against the floor. Behind him stood Vanessa, wrapped in a fresh dry coat, her eyes glittering with a malicious glee. She thought the law would scare the old man. She thought she was holding all the cards.

"Arthur," Sheriff Miller said, tipping his hat out of respect for the wealthiest man in the county, though his tone remained firm. "I’m sorry to barge in on a night like this, but Mrs. Carter here has filed an emergency report. She claims her stepdaughter stole highly valuable personal property and fled to your estate. I need to take the girl back into custody."

Arthur didn't rise from his chair. He slowly poured himself a glass of amber liquid from a crystal decanter. "Donald. I assume you brought the proper emergency warrant required to remove a minor from a private residence under the protection of a legal relative?"

The sheriff blinked, shifting his weight. "Well, no, Arthur. It’s an emergency situation. The mother has legal guardianship—"

"Step-mother," Arthur corrected, his voice cutting through the room like a physical blade. He stood up, towering over the sheriff. He tossed the documents from the metal box onto the table. "Look at those papers, Donald. You’ve known me for thirty years. Look at the birth certificate. Look at the adoption decree."

Sheriff Miller frowned, stepping forward to look at the documents. As his eyes scanned the official state seals and my mother’s unmistakable signature, his expression hardened.

"This girl is Eleanor's daughter," Miller whispered, looking from the papers to me. "The legal heir to the Whitmore trust."

"Exactly," Arthur said. "And more importantly, look at the date on that life insurance policy. It was executed six months ago. My late son-in-law, Thomas Carter, suspected his wife was engaging in financial misconduct. Now, Donald, let’s talk about the 'workplace accident' that killed my son-in-law two weeks ago. Isn't it interesting that Vanessa here filed for the insurance payout less than twenty-four hours after his funeral?"

Vanessa’s face went from smug to utterly terrified in a split second. "That’s a lie! Thomas was clumsy! He fell from the scaffolding at the construction site! It was an accident!"

"The construction site owned by a shell company registered under your maiden name, Vanessa?" Arthur asked, stepping closer to her. He pulled a fresh printed document from his desk—one he must have retrieved from his computer terminal minutes earlier. "My legal team works fast, even at midnight. You owed over three hundred thousand dollars to private lenders. You needed Thomas dead, and you needed Lily gone so you could collect the full two million."

Sheriff Miller looked at Vanessa, his hand instinctively dropping to his utility belt. "Vanessa, is this true?"

"No! He’s making it up! He’s an old lunatic who hasn't left this house in fifteen years!" she screamed, her voice bouncing off the high ceilings. "I want my kid back! Lily, get over here right now!"

She lunged toward me, her red fingernails clawing at the air. But Arthur stepped directly into her path, his massive hand gripping her wrist with a strength that didn't seem possible for a man his age.

"If you ever touch my granddaughter again," Arthur whispered, his eyes burning with a primal, ancestral fury, "I will spend every single cent of my fortune to ensure you spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security prison. Donald, remove this trash from my home before I file a formal complaint against your department for assisting an attempted extortion."

Sheriff Miller didn't hesitate. He grabbed Vanessa by the arm, twisting it behind her back. "Vanessa Carter, you’re coming down to the station for questioning regarding financial fraud and potential secondary investigation into Thomas Carter’s death. Move."

As Vanessa was dragged out, screaming curses into the quiet night, Arthur finally turned to look at me. The hard, statuesque mask was completely gone. He sank down to his knees on the floorboards, matching my height, and gently reached out to touch my wet, tangled hair.

"You’re safe now, Lily," he said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I let your mother go once. I will never let you go."
