Chapter 2 - The Paper Fortress

When dawn broke, pale gray light filtered through the bare windows of the master bedroom. I was still sitting on the floor, shivering in my coat, covered in fine glass dust from the broken kitchen door.
My Mercedes was still idling in the driveway, its battery nearly drained. The stranger's pickup truck was gone—the buyer's contractor had clearly parked there overnight to secure the perimeter before demolition or renovation.
I picked up the manila envelope Mara had left in the nursery. My hands were shaking so violently I almost dropped it again.
I dragged myself down the stairs and drove straight to my corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan. I needed my legal team. I needed my money. I needed to freeze every bank account and force Mara back into the light.
When I arrived at Caldwell Investment Group at 8:00 AM, my assistant, Sarah, looked up from her desk with wide, terrified eyes. She took one look at my torn clothes, bloodshot eyes, and disheveled hair, and stood up instantly.
"Mr. Caldwell..." she stuttered. "There are two officers from the SEC waiting in your office."
My heart stopped. "What?"
I pushed past her and shoved open my office doors.
Sitting in two leather armchairs were two federal agents in dark suits, alongside my lead corporate legal counsel, Arthur Vance. Arthur looked as pale as a ghost.
"Nathan," Arthur said, his voice completely devoid of hope. "Do not say a word."
"Arthur, what is this?" I demanded, clutching my briefcase. "My wife has taken my son! She wiped out my house! I need a temporary restraining order, and I need—"
"Nathan, shut up!" Arthur snapped, standing up. "Your wife didn't just take your house. Yesterday at 4:00 PM, Mara walked into the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York."
The room went completely black around the edges.
"She handed them three thumb drives," one of the federal agents said calmly, standing up and unbuttoning his jacket. "Complete offshore ledger entries, shell company registration files, and tax evasion records for Caldwell Investment Group spanning the last four years. She spent months documenting your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands."
"She didn't have access to those!" I yelled, sweat breaking out across my forehead. "Those records were password protected on a private server!"
"Your wife was a senior forensic accountant at Deloitte before she gave up her career to raise your son, Nathan," Arthur said, shaking his head with a look of pure pity. "Did you really think a six-character password was going to keep her out?"
The second agent stepped forward and pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Nathan Caldwell, you are under arrest for grand fraud, wire fraud, and tax evasion. You have the right to remain silent..."
As the cold steel clinked around my wrists, the truth hit me like a runaway train.

Mara hadn't just left me. She hadn't just taken Noah.
She had systematically dismantled my entire financial empire, exposed my darkest corporate sins, and handed me over to the federal government. She had burnt my paper fortress to the ground, leaving me with nothing but the clothes on my back and the lingering smell of Tessa’s perfume.
