Chapter 10 - Home Again

The afternoon sun cast long, beautiful golden beams across the wrap-around porch of the restored valley farmhouse.

My mother, Evelyn, sat in a comfortable plush armchair, wrapped in a soft handmade quilt. Her skin had recovered its healthy pink glow, her hair was freshly styled, and her eyes—once dull with fear and exhaustion—were bright, clear, and serene.

She was holding a warm cup of herbal tea, watching two blue jays flutter among the branches of the flowering cherry oak tree in the front lawn.

I stepped out through the screen door, carrying a plate of warm lemon scones.

"Here you go, Mom," I said gently, setting the plate on the side table beside her.

Evelyn smiled up at me—a genuine, radiant smile that warmed my soul deeper than any sunbeam ever could. She reached out and took my hand, holding it in her warm, soft palm.

"Thank you, Clara," she murmured softly.

"You don't need to thank me, Mom," I said, sitting on the porch step beside her chair, resting my head against her knee just like I used to do when I was a little girl. "I'm just doing my job."

"No," Evelyn shook her head, stroking my hair with tender maternal pride. "You didn't just do a job, my sweet girl. You brought me home."

We sat together in peaceful silence as the afternoon breeze rustled through the green leaves of the orchard. The dark winter blizzard, the icy hospital gate, the betrayal, and the pain were all far behind us now, washed away by the relentless tide of justice and love.

Ahead lay only warm sun, peaceful afternoons, and a future where my mother would never, ever have to be afraid again.
