Chapter 10 - The Eternal Spring

Five years later.

The summer sun shone bright over the sprawling green pastures of the Sterling Heritage Trust.

At eight years old, the trust had grown into one of the state’s premier land conservation sanctuaries, protecting over five thousand acres of pristine Kentucky forest, riverways, and wildlife habitats from corporate development.

On the wrap-around porch of the main house, Claire sat at her grand wooden easel, painting a large canvas capturing the golden sunlight streaming through the pine forest. She was vibrant, beautiful, and deeply celebrated in the art world, her work featured in galleries across the nation.

Down in the green garden below the porch, five-year-old Lily was running through the wild lavender patches, her laughter ringing out like silver bells as she chased a bright yellow butterfly.

"Daddy! Look! It landed on my shoe!" Lily cheered, pointing her tiny finger down at her canvas sneaker.

I walked down the stone porch steps, wearing a simple linen shirt and work boots, stepping into the warm grass beside my daughter.

"That's because you smell like sweet lavender, little goose," I laughed, scooping her up into my arms, tossing her high into the air as she giggled with pure, unbridled delight.

Claire set her paintbrush down, stepping to the porch railing, resting her arms on the warm wood as she looked down at us with eyes filled with boundless, eternal love.

"Lunch is ready, you two!" Claire called out, her voice floating across the warm summer breeze.

I carried Lily up the steps, holding my daughter in one arm while wrapping my other arm around Claire’s waist, pulling both of my girls tight against my heart.

We stood together on the porch of the home my father built, looking out over the endless green land, the sparkling river corridor, and the bright, clear blue horizon stretching out into a limitless future.

The flowers I had dropped in the freezing snow five years ago had withered away long ago.

But in their place, born from courage, truth, and an unbreakable love, a garden had bloomed that would last for generations to come.
