Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Camera Feed

The metallic click of the safety coming off his Sig Sauer P365 echoed through the vast, quiet bedroom. Grant gripped the weapon, his knuckles turning white. The weight of the gun felt wrong—unnatural in a home that was supposed to be a fortress protected by thirty-million-dollar surveillance grids and six elite former Special Forces operators.
He walked out of the master suite and down the carpeted hallway toward the north wing. The morning light hit the high arched windows, casting long, skeletal shadows across the hardwood.
Every footstep Grant took felt heavy, suffocating. His mind raced back to the smear of blood near the grand staircase. Was it Claire’s? Emma’s? Noah’s? The thought of his four-year-old son or eight-year-old daughter bleeding while he lay in a satin-sheeted bed at the Langford with Vanessa made a hot, nauseating wave of bile rise in his throat.
He reached the heavy reinforced door that led to the security hub beneath the east garage. The digital keypad was dark. The power had been cut or bypassed. Grant pulled a manual master key from his pocket—a key he had never used since purchasing the estate four years ago—and inserted it into the mechanical lock.
The lock clicked open with a heavy thud.
The smell hit him first.
It wasn't perfume or dry leaves. It was ozone, burnt copper, and copper-flavored iron.
Grant pushed the door open, his gun raised.
The room was pitch black, save for a single flickering monitor in the far corner. On the floor, slumping against the main console, was Marcus—the head of his private security detail, a man Grant paid four hundred thousand dollars a year to guarantee his family’s safety.
Marcus was dead. A single, clean exit wound marred the back of his tactical vest. The blood pooled around his boots was dark, thick, and completely dry.
Grant stepped over the body, his breath hitching in his chest. His eyes darted to the single operating monitor.
It was playing a video loop. A single clip, set on auto-repeat.
Grant stepped closer to the screen, lowering his gun slightly.
The timestamp in the top right corner read: 02:14:08 AM.
On screen, the high-definition thermal camera in the main living room showed movement. Four figures clad in unmarked tactical gear, wearing night-vision goggles and carrying suppressed submachine guns, moved through the room with terrifying, military precision. They hadn't forced the doors. They had used Grant’s personal override code—a code known only to him, Claire, and his chief technology officer.
Then, the camera angle shifted.
Claire appeared on screen. She was wearing her tan coat, her hair pulled back into a messy bun. She held Noah in her left arm, his face buried in her neck, his small blue blanket trailing on the floor. With her right hand, she dragged Emma behind her.
Emma was crying. Her mouth opened in silent screams on the audio-less recording.
One of the tactical men stepped into the frame. He reached out to grab Emma’s arm.
What happened next made Grant’s breath catch in his throat.
Claire didn't scream. She didn't beg.
With lightning speed, she pulled a heavy brass candlestick off the side table and slammed it directly into the mercenary's face mask. The glass shattered. The man stumbled back, his nose spraying dark blood—the blood that was now drying on Grant's white marble floor near the stairs.
Claire didn't hesitate. She grabbed Emma, shoved her toward the kitchen service entrance, and pulled something small from her pocket—a silver flash drive. She slammed it into the central home automation hub near the wall, turning the entire estate’s electronic locks to local override before throwing her body over her children as the mercenary raised his rifle.
A second man stepped into the frame, holding his hand up to stop his partner from shooting. He leaned in close to Claire’s ear.
On the muted video, Claire’s face transformed from desperate mother to icy predator. She nodded once, slowly.
Then, she looked directly into the camera lens.
She knew the feed was recording. She looked into the camera as if she were staring through the screen, straight into Grant’s soul, six hours in the future.
She mouthed four words clearly:
They know about Vanessa.
May you like
The video glitched, turned to static, and restarted.
Grant stood frozen in the cold security room, the dead body of his chief guard at his feet, watching his wife look through time to call him a coward.
