Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Cards

The storm finally broke, rain pouring down in sheets, washing away the dirt and blood from the courtyard stones.
Julian was slammed against the side of his own truck, his hands cuffed tightly behind his back. He spat blood onto the pavement, cursing at the federal agents who were reading him his rights.
Up on the balcony, Vanessa looked like a ghost. The wine glass had slipped from her fingers, shattering on the stone patio below. Two female FBI agents were already upstairs, entering the house to place her under federal arrest.
"This is a mistake!" Vanessa shrieked as she was led down the grand staircase in handcuffs, her expensive red dress soaked by the rain. "My brother is the Deputy Chief! You can't do this to me! I am Vanessa Whitmore!"
"Not anymore," Agent Rodriguez said, stepping into her path and showing her a federal arrest warrant signed by a United States Magistrate Judge. "Your brother was relieved of duty twenty minutes ago, Mrs. Whitmore. Federal agents are currently searching his office at the Dallas Police Department. Turns out, taking bribes to cover up the systematic murder of a prominent businessman leaves a massive digital footprint."
Vanessa’s eyes found mine. For the first time, I saw absolute, unadulterated terror in her gaze. She wasn't looking at an angry stepdaughter anymore; she was looking at the woman who had completely dismantled her entire life in less than forty-eight hours.
"Claire," she pleaded, her voice cracking, trying to sound fragile one last time. "Please. I did what I had to do for the family. Your father was sick. He wasn't in his right mind."
"You poisoned him," I said, walking up to her until we were inches apart. "You locked my grandmother in a cage. You tried to erase my existence. There is no mercy for you here. There is only the law."
I turned away from her as the agents escorted her into the back of a waiting federal transport vehicle.
Marcus ran out from the house, a massive umbrella over his head, a huge grin on his face despite the pouring rain. "Lieutenant! Miss Evelyn is awake. Dr. Reynolds says her vitals are stabilizing. She wants to see you."
I wiped the rainwater from my face and smiled—the first real smile I had felt in six months. "Thank you, Marcus. Let's go take care of Grandma."

As I walked back into the house, Thomas Vance arrived, carrying a briefcase full of emergency injunctions. Within an hour, the federal judge had issued an emergency order granting me sole temporary executorship of the Whitmore estate and a permanent restraining order against Vanessa, Julian, and any of their associates.
The house was ours again. But the battle wasn't completely over; the trial was coming, and I intended to be the star witness.
