Chapter 4 – “The War for My Father’s Legacy”

The first attack came three days after the world learned my name.

Not from Marcus.

Not from Vanessa.

Not from the media.

From inside my father’s empire.

And somehow, that hurt more.

Because betrayal from strangers was expected.

Betrayal from people who had worked beside my father for decades was something else entirely.

It meant they had watched him build everything.

They had shaken his hand.

They had called him a genius.

They had benefited from his kindness.

And yet, the moment he was gone…

They believed his daughter was weak enough to destroy.

The emergency board meeting began at nine in the morning.

I arrived early.

That was something my father always did.

“Arrive before people expect you.”

His words.

His lesson.

The board members entered one by one.

Some greeted me warmly.

Some avoided eye contact.

Some smiled too much.

My father taught me that fake kindness was often more dangerous than open hostility.

The person who hates you tells you where they stand.

The person who pretends to love you keeps the knife hidden.

Victor Hale entered last.

The acting CEO.

The man who had been waiting for an opportunity.

“Emily.”

“Victor.”

He sat across from me.

The room became quiet.

Then he placed a folder on the table.

“I believe we need to discuss the future of Carter Global.”

I opened the folder.

Inside was a proposal.

A proposal to remove me as chairman.

I looked up.

“Already?”

Victor remained calm.

“This company cannot be led by emotion.”

Interesting.

The same man who had never met me before was now questioning my ability to lead.

“I agree.”

He seemed surprised.

“I’m glad.”

“But I disagree with your conclusion.”

The room shifted.

“I am not here because of emotion.”

I closed the folder.

“I am here because I am the person my father trusted.”

Victor leaned forward.

“Your father was extraordinary. But he was also human. People make mistakes.”

I studied him.

“Are you suggesting my father made a mistake choosing me?”

“I’m suggesting he may have underestimated the complexity of this company.”

I smiled slightly.

“And you believe you understand it better?”

A few board members looked down.

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“I have spent twenty years inside this company.”

“And my father spent forty years building it.”

Silence.

“Yet somehow, after three days, you believe the problem is not the people who have worked here for years…”

I looked around the room.

“…but the daughter he trusted.”

Nobody spoke.

Because they knew.

They were not challenging my qualifications.

They were challenging my right to exist in my father’s world.

After the meeting, Richard walked beside me.

“They underestimated you.”

“Yes.”

“Does that bother you?”

I thought about it.

“No.”

Richard looked surprised.

“It doesn’t?”

“No.”

I stopped walking.

“My father was underestimated his entire life.”

Richard smiled.

“And what did he do?”

“He let people underestimate him until it became useful.”

“Exactly.”

That afternoon, I entered my father’s private office for the first time.

Nobody had touched it since his death.

It was exactly how he left it.

A desk.

A chair.

A bookshelf.

A small plant near the window.

No luxury.

No symbols of power.

Just my father.

I walked slowly around the room.

My fingers touched the books on the shelf.

Legal documents.

Business strategies.

Philosophy.

History.

The same kind of books he kept at home.

The same books I thought were strange for a janitor to read.

Now I understood.

He had never been pretending to be intelligent.

He had been pretending not to be powerful.

There was a difference.

On the desk was another envelope.

My name.

Again.

I sat down before opening it.

My hands shook.

“Dad…”

I whispered.

“How many secrets did you leave me?”

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Emily,

Power does not reveal who you are. It reveals who everyone else is.

I smiled sadly.

That sounded exactly like him.

You will face people who believe your kindness is weakness.

Do not let them turn you into someone you are not.

A wolf does not become a monster because sheep fear it.

I laughed softly.

Only my father could write something like that.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

And my smile disappeared.

There is someone inside Carter Global who betrayed me while I was alive.

I froze.

My eyes moved back to the sentence.

Again.

And again.

Someone inside.

Someone close.

My father knew.

He had known there was a traitor.

I did not expose them because I needed proof.

You will find it.

Trust the evidence, not your emotions.

I placed the letter down.

The room suddenly felt colder.

“Richard.”

He entered immediately.

“Yes?”

“Did my father ever mention a traitor?”

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You know something.”

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Emily…”

“No.”

My voice became firm.

“If my father spent his entire life protecting his company, I deserve to know what threatens it.”

Richard was silent.

Then he closed the door.

“There was suspicion.”

“About whom?”

“Several people.”

“Names.”

He hesitated.

Then:

“Victor Hale.”

I wasn’t surprised.

But hearing it still hurt.

“Why?”

“Your father discovered financial irregularities.”

“How much?”

“Approximately two hundred million dollars.”

My stomach tightened.

“Stolen?”

“Possibly.”

“Possibly?”

Richard looked at me.

“Your father never accused someone without absolute proof.”

That was my father.

Careful.

Fair.

Patient.

“What happened?”

“Victor denied everything.”

“And my father?”

“He started investigating privately.”

“Then he died.”

Richard nodded.

The timing was too perfect.

My father died.

I inherited everything.

Victor suddenly wanted me removed.

Marcus suddenly discovered he wanted to talk.

Everyone who wanted something from my father was appearing.

And all of them believed I was easy to manipulate.

They were wrong.

That evening, I made a decision.

I called Jonathan, my father’s attorney.

“I need access to everything related to the company investigation.”

He paused.

“Emily, some of those files are restricted.”

“I’m the owner.”

“Yes.”

“Then unlock them.”

A moment of silence.

Then:

“Yes, Miss Carter.”

The investigation files were overwhelming.

Thousands of pages.

Transactions.

Emails.

Financial records.

Names.

I spent hours reading.

Then I found something.

A transfer.

A large transfer.

From one of Carter Global’s subsidiaries.

To an offshore account.

The account holder name was hidden.

But the approval signature was visible.

My hands went cold.

Because I recognized the signature.

Not Victor.

Someone else.

Someone closer.

Someone I never expected.

Marcus Carter.

My husband.

I stared at the document.

Impossible.

My husband was involved?

My mind raced.

The debt.

The affair.

The sudden interest in my father’s money.

The account access attempt.

Everything connected.

But why?

How?

I continued reading.

The transfer happened eight months ago.

Eight months.

While I was pregnant.

While Marcus was telling me he loved me.

While he kissed me goodbye every morning.

He was stealing from my father.

I called Richard immediately.

“Richard.”

“Yes?”

“I found something.”

A pause.

“What?”

“Marcus.”

Silence.

The kind of silence that confirms everything.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

I sent him the document.

Seconds passed.

Then:

“Oh my God.”

My voice lowered.

“What?”

“Emily…”

“What?”

“This changes everything.”

The next morning, Marcus showed up again.

This time, he wasn’t confident.

He looked nervous.

“Emily, we need to talk.”

I didn’t invite him in.

“What do you want?”

“I made a mistake.”

I almost smiled.

A mistake.

Cheating was a mistake.

Leaving your pregnant wife was a mistake.

Stealing from her dead father was not.

“What kind of mistake?”

He looked at me.

“I shouldn’t have left.”

There it was.

Not:

“I hurt you.”

Not:

“I betrayed you.”

Just:

“I shouldn’t have left.”

Because he regretted the consequences.

Not the action.

“Why?”

“Because I realized I still love you.”

I stared at him.

“You love me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why were you with Vanessa?”

He looked away.

“Things were complicated.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Things were simple.”

He looked confused.

“You wanted something else.”

“Emily—”

“You thought I had nothing.”

His face changed.

“You thought leaving me would cost you nothing.”

“That’s not true.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

Silence.

Again.

His greatest enemy.

The truth.

“Did you know about my father’s money?”

His expression froze.

Only for a second.

But enough.

I saw it.

“No.”

Lie.

A terrible one.

“You knew.”

“Emily—”

“You knew.”

My voice became colder.

“And you married me anyway.”

His face went pale.

“That’s not what happened.”

“Then explain.”

He couldn’t.

Because explanations require truth.

I stepped closer.

“My father spent his entire life studying people.”

Marcus swallowed.

“And now I understand why.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“He knew exactly what kind of person you were.”

His anger appeared.

“You think you’re better than everyone now?”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I think I finally see clearly.”

He left.

But this time, he looked afraid.

Because he knew.

The woman he abandoned was no longer powerless.

That night, I stood in my father’s office.

I looked at his photograph.

“I found him, Dad.”

The room was silent.

“I found the person who betrayed you.”

The city lights reflected against the glass.

And for the first time, I felt something stronger than grief.

Purpose.

My father had left me an empire.

But more importantly…

He left me a mission.

To protect everything he built.

To expose everyone who used his kindness.

And to make sure his legacy did not fall into the hands of people who never deserved it.

Tomorrow, the investigation would begin.

Tomorrow, the war would start.

And this time…

I would not be fighting as a grieving daughter.

I would be fighting as:

Emily Carter.

The heir.

The owner.

May you like

The woman who inherited her father’s empire…

And his ability to destroy anyone who threatened it.
