Chapter 5 - The Frozen Box

By 8:30 AM on Saturday morning, the storm in Duluth had cleared into a frigid, brilliant blue sky.

Big Mike stood inside the vault of the Duluth Merchants Bank, his coat dripping melted snow onto the polished marble floor. Beside him stood the bank manager and a court-appointed notary whom Frank Sterling had arranged from Des Moines.

The manager turned two keys in the heavy brass lock of Box 412. With a metallic slide, the narrow metal drawer pulled free.

"Here you are, gentlemen," the manager said.

Big Mike carried the metal box to a small private viewing table. With gloves removed, he carefully lifted the lid.

Inside lay three distinct items:

First, a thick green ledger book filled with Emily’s neat, precise handwriting, detailing every single transaction, threats made by Caleb, and dates where he had taken money from her personal accounts.

Second, a USB drive labeled: FINANCIAL AUDIT - CALEB ROSS.

Third, a small, worn velvet box containing a simple gold wedding band that had belonged to Tank’s late wife—Emily’s mother—which Tank had given to Emily on her sixteenth birthday.

Big Mike picked up the green ledger and opened the first page. Glued to the inside cover was a handwritten note addressed to anyone who opened the box.

To whoever finds this: Caleb Ross discovered my trust fund in 2018. When I refused to give him power of attorney, he threatened to use his connections to take Daniel away from me and put him into state foster care under a false name. He forced me into hiding. On the USB drive are five years of encrypted files showing how Caleb embezzled over two million dollars from his primary corporate clients, using my fake identities to hide his off-shore accounts. He doesn't want Daniel. He wants to keep Daniel’s legal guardianship so no auditor can ever open the trust accounts that hold his paper trail.

Big Mike closed the ledger, his heavy jaw set like iron.

"We got him," Two-Ton Tony whispered over Mike’s shoulder. "This isn't just a custody case anymore. This is a federal indictment."

"Get the notary to seal every single page," Big Mike commanded, stepping back. "We’re flying back. I'm not chancing another drive."

Within an hour, Big Mike had chartered a small, twin-engine private aircraft out of the Duluth regional airport, paid for directly out of the motorcycle club's emergency legal fund. The plane lifted off into the clear blue sky, racing south toward Des Moines.

Meanwhile, back in Cedar Falls, Caleb Ross was sitting in the high-end conference room of his legal firm, surrounded by three corporate defense lawyers.

Caleb’s phone rang. He answered it angrily. "Did you stop them?"

"Negative," a raspy voice replied on the other end. "The truck bypassed the interstate. They made it to the bank. A private plane just took off from Duluth heading to Des Moines."

Caleb’s face went completely dead white. He dropped the phone onto the glass table, his breathing becoming shallow and rapid.

"Caleb?" his lead attorney asked, frowning. "What is it?"

"She kept the ledger," Caleb whispered, his hands trembling violently. "The bitch kept the double-entry records from 2019."

The lead attorney stood up slowly, closing his briefcase with a quiet click. "Caleb... did you use your son's trust entity to funnel those offshore transfers we discussed last month?"

Caleb didn't answer. He stared out the high-rise window at the city below, realizing that the giant man in the leather vest wasn't just standing in the way of a child.

He was standing at the edge of his prison cell door.
